Default Need a new rifle - canít decide which one

Iím in the market for either a 6.5 CM or 6.5 PRC. Iíve been looking at the Browning Hellís Canyon Speed, Bergara Wilderness B-14 and a Christensen Arms Mesa. I am really digging the CA Mesa but thereís not a ton of real world reviews on it. Anyone have one or any of the other rifles I listed? I go back and forth daily on what I want. Iíve found all 3 in the store so Iíve been able to compare all of them next to each other. Iíd like to hear any of your experiences with these rifles.

Out of all the ones you mentioned, I will go with the Christensen Arms Mesa 6.5 PRC.

Get both! I did this week. But I got the Savage Axis 6.5 CM and it shot great right out of the box.

I also got my dream rifle. Browning x-bolt Hellís Canyon speed in .270.

Iím thinking of getting a matching 300 WinMag in hells canyon- which I believe they make.

Nothing wrong with two new rifles! I have a Savage 6.5 CM and they are shooters for sure. I hear the Hellís Canyons are tack drivers too. They do make the 300 WM in that gun. You should get it too!

My dad has it narrowed down to those same 3. Scheels has all 3 in stock so he was able to go check them out, he was planning on the browning but after he felt them all chose the bergara in 6.5prc. It’s a really great rifle. Don’t think you can go wrong with that list

I don't know if current ammo availability is a factor, but I think 6.5 CM ammo is quite a bit more available than PRC from what I've seen.

Not sure if you have FB, but the CA rifles are gaining a pretty bad reputation on 6.5prc page.

For factory gun, I'd go bergara then browning, removing CA completely.

Bergara 6.5 CM (more ammoe available)....If those are my 2 options. For my usage, i like the 270 over the 6.5 Cm.

I have a Mesa and a Speed in 6.5 creedmoor. Both shoot well, but I always grab the Speed.

Bergara B-14 HMR 6.5 PRC
Only problem is finding ammo.
Plenty of 6.5 CM ammo but PRC is none available.
Therefore the CM makes more sense.
Bergara rifles might just be more accurate off the shelf than the lowly Savage.

From what I have read the CA is either a love or hate. I don't do FB, so I can't read what they are saying is wrong with the CA. I am already set up to reload 6.5 CM since i already have one, and no one has any 6.5 PRC...anywhere. I do have other rifles I could use in the interim, so I'm hesitant to buy a gun based on ammo that I can get today but if I wait a little bit I can have the PRC. I have a 300 WM, so if I really need more power, I have that covered. Those of you that have experience with the CM and PRC, do you think the extra ooomph is worth upgrading?

Depends on what your shooting/hunting. I personally have a hard time justifying the PRC from a ballistics perspective. Iíll eventually have one because I want one.

They use the same bullet, but the PRC uses a larger case, so more powder. You will get more velocity from the PRC compared to the CM. For what I will do the CM will work for about all situations, but really, I just want a PRC.

Not right now it isnt. At least not at my distributors. Could be all the big boys bought it all.
EDIT: Neither of them are available. lol But you're right there are a lot more manufacturers of CM at least right now.

as mentioned CA has a hit or miss rep for quite awhile now. I have the hells and a bergara and dont believe you can go wrong with either. have taken animals with both at over 200 yds. obviously not crazy distance but has served me well

Roughly 300 FPS is the short answer. You can shoot the heavier bullets (150s) with prc as itís fast enough to stabilize. But, you really need a medium or long action to really pull performance out of a prc.

I bought the Christensen Ridgeline 6.5 Creedmoor for my wife and son a few months ago. Very impressed with the quality. It will stack them up with the hornady 143 gr eldx.

I'd recommend the 6.5 version of the TC Compass. I'm consistently nailing steel at 600 yards with very little effort.

I think Iím going to go with a Bergara. The general consensus out there is they are great shooting rifles from what Iíve heard and read. They also test each one with a 3 shot 100 yard group. That sounds like some good QC to me. Now Iíve started looking at the Premier Approach and the Premier Highlander. CB

I find 6.5PRC ammo every time I go to academy or Scheels(which is more often than I should admit). Itís not nearly as scarce as some people would have you believe.

I'd agree you can find some kind of 6.5 PRC ammo in quite a few places, but can you find anything other than the cheap plinker stuff or Hornady?

In my experience over the past few months, it's nonexistent.

Got my new Bergara 6.5 CM set up and scope mounted and bore sighted today. Break in this week end. Gonna be fun smelling fresh burning gun powder Sat morning at the lease. We have targets at 50, 100, 350, 500, and 800. Vortex Strike Eagle 5x25. This bastage is HEAVY. Definitely not a spot and stalk rifle. The scope is YUGE but has good vision for my old eyes. Almost like looking thru a Leupold but clearer.

I was shopping for the same. I just didn’t like the feel of any of them and I really wanted the 6.5 prc. Almost bought the browning long range ( non cerakote, as I just don’t like cerakoted guns) but fell in love when I handled the tikka A1 tac, but it is only available in the 6.5 creedmoor, and I liked the rifle so much better then any thing else I looked at I bought it.

You're better off with the Creedmoor. Better ammo availability and a more versatile round for Texas game. Longer barrel life. As another poster mentioned if you need something stronger look at .270 or .284 options.

(No knock on the PRC overall - especially if you reload and want a fast 6.5 cal, say for WY antelope - OP just needs a rifle though.)

If it was me it would be between at xbolt hells canyon and the bergara hmr pro. I’ve got an hmr pro in 6.5 creed and it’s accurate as can be but I have a hells canyon in 26 nosler and it is a warrior and might be my favorite all around hunting rifle. The bergara is nice but for hunting is a little on the heavy side

The Hornady eldX shoots pretty good for me. Hereís a 6Ē 4 shot group at 800yds from last weekend. When itís that good, donít see why Iíd look for anything else.
