I've found it nearly impossible to harvest backstraps from a live deer.

Call it whatever. I think you could make a distinction if you let the meat rot and didnt harvest any like some trophy hunters do or if you couldnt find the blood trail till the next day. Then you just killed it and failed to harvest. TPWD has a "harvest log" for deer so there is that.

I posted on FB the other day about my first Trad harvest. I felt really stupid for not just saying "I killed it with my recurve".

I don't harvest or kill. I go grocery shopping in my "Outdoor Grocery Store". I do a lot of shopping on public lands. And pay for it with the labor I put into shopping.

The fish are biting, and there's hogs to be kill-t. Gotta go!

Shoot to "kill".

If you need a soft term, I think the game warden's use "dispatch".

Yep like some of the others stated, gotta kill the animal to harvest the meat so it's actually both every time. I prefer saying "kill" as we are taking a life and I think it helps to understand the gravity of it.

Some of my favorite movies

Natural Born Harvesters
The Replacement Harvesters
Harvest or be Harvested
The Harvester Elite
License to Harvest
Harvest Bill
Harvest Bill, volume 2
Dressed to Harvest
To Harvest a Mocking Bird

Personally harvest doesn’t sound right to me. But I do fill out the TPWD Harvest log at the ranch, so I guess I condone it.

I don’t cater to snowflakes, pc addicts, people with weak stomachs, etc.
I kill deer, hogs, doves, quail, pheasant, etc.
I really don’t even use the term harvest being my garden is only a half acre or so. So I just pick whatever I grow!!

I use the term kill. But if i were going to differentiate, I'd harvest an animal that i'm going to eat. I'll kill an animal I'm not. So I could harvest a deer, but kill a coyote? That said, I'm going to say "I killed a buck this morning" not "I harvested a buck this morning".

Not any big time survey, but over the years I’ve sat around a lot of hunting campfires. I have never heard anyone say “This morning I harvested that eight point I’ve been after” or “I harvested an old dry doe by the big lake” or “I harvested five quail from three coveys”, etc. I usually hear I “killed” or “shot” various critters. Folks also don’t harvest fish, they catch ‘em. Just me, but saying “I harvested” a critter sounds a little like I am ashamed or embarrassed of what I did, which I am not. Look in a mirror and smile. See those pointy teeth under your eyes? Don’t ever let the word “harvest” pass through them unless you are speaking of crops.

Interesting observation 3chord. Thinking back I can't remember ever hearing someone speak the word harvest in relation to killing an animal. I can only remember reading it. Why is that?

It’s both, I don’t understand the big deal. I look at it like, if you are feeding them, know them by name, watch them grow, until you or some one tells you it’s ok to shoot them, have trail cam pictures of them over the years, know how old they are. I don’t see any difference between that and raising crops to harvest when you decide it’s time. You are eating both ( hopefully). You are basically doing the same thing with them. You have to kill crops and animals in order to consume them. Kill, harvest take your pick. Harvest sounds better to the masses. But the out come is exactly the same.

What about wild growing dew berries, black berries, apples, rhubarb, asparagus, mushrooms etc. And once “ picked” or dug up, you are killing them. A buck plants the seed, for the future harvest.

I say kill when talking to hunters. I'll use shot, took, or harvested in mixed company, with strangers and in written communications.

I can respect that not everyone is familiar with hunting and may not like the idea of killing animals. If I'm discussing outside of fellow hunters, it will always be with an eye toward advocating for hunting. I'm not looking to fuel their ignorance of hunting or its benefits by distilling hunting down to killing an animal.
