Construction Help - Barndo Design Change

    Question / Input Most Appreciated:

    Issue:

We are seriously contemplating closing in our shop, turning the back half (utility / man caved) into a room with a wall between it and boat and will tie in the central air.

The dilemma is that the original design contemplated a rolling door (one that rolls into a canister). The builder can support it but noted it requires concrete added to concrete (as noted below) and could represent a weak spot.

The rolling door would have seated where the slab changes and the yellow shading is where the slab extension would go up to , allowing the mounting of two exteriour french doors.

Thoughts, or alternative options for us?

Will the area be exposed to foot traffic or vehicle traffic?

No vehicle, but yes, it will be an infrequent exit door to back porch from the utility room for foot traffic.

I'd just put some lumber down so you have the option of the roll-up door if your needs change down the road.

I am going with AC and the roll down door option would be out given lack of insulation it has. This is a home, so I need it a little cleaner than lumber option (I might use that route for shop that didn't have to pass the muster of co owners).

Rough up old concrete. Add bonding agent. Pour a high PSI grout and move on. It will.hold just fine if done correctly.

This. We use this option setting massive rotating equipment packages in LNG plants. Should work for a doorway. Request Sika brand grout.

This is the way to go. We use this method all the time and works great! If you dowel/pin and then use thin set it will start to break up after a couple years due to the traffic.
