Thanks, Brandon. Iím looking at winter wheat and clover, mainly. Allot of folks have suggested different things but those two will be my anchor this first year. FIL informed me that he was going to mix in a few turnips as well just to see how well they do and how the deer respond. Based on the need for nutrients Iíll be really working on getting the dirt good and balanced these first few years.

Still have the cams to female and fawn only mode. There are only a few small bucks that have found the feeder.

Heading to sunny, Walters Oklahoma tomorrow for the Dove Season opener. Then itís back in a few weeks to plant and make final preparations!

The birds were flying mostly in the evenings over at Walters. We managed to shoot enough for a few meals. The weather was good and company even better. Havenít got the fields to attract the bird of peace to our place so it doesnít look to be a dove destination.

Mr. Hunt stepped up to the side by side .20 this season and managed to put down 5 birds. Better than me at 10 years old!

Thinking about spreading all that seed and fertilizer in a few weeks already has my back hurting. (I know itís just ~2 acres but Iím getting old ). Went ahead and ordered a 12 volt spreader that mounts onto the ATV. Made by Moultrie it was just about $130. We will see how it does!

Anyone have any experience with these?

Don’t know anything about that spreader, I got a pull behind spreader, holds about 80-100# from tractor supply and I pull with my cart. I bet that electric is nice!

Yes sir, and have spread thousands of pounds of seed and fertilizer with it. I tried to find when we bought ours but no luck, I am guessing 10 or more years ago and still running the original motor.

Ordered my seed and fertilizer today:

-250 lbs of winter wheat
-12 lbs of Ladino Clover
-200 lbs Nitrogen
-100 lbs Phosphorus
-400 lbs Lime

We are going to plant on Saturday. Hoping for favorable conditions. Between school and family commitments it is this weekend or the second week of October and I think that would be too late that far North.

Looking forward to seeing how things go being a deer farmer this first year!

We got back up to the hilltop this weekend with tractor, seed, and fertilizer in tow!

FIL and my two youngest helped get the plot ready. After discing it we found about three bucketloads of additional rocks. The kids both want to hunt this fall so we discussed the concept of sweat equity. After a few hours they understood the reality of this concept.

After roughly 4 hours on the tractor and another couple of hours on the four wheeler we got the food plots in.

That 50lb ATV spreader we picked up paid for itself in spades. What a time saver! I donít yet have the plot acreage to justify a 3-point spreader so this ATV spreader is what the doctor ordered.

Due to rock surrounding the pumpjack I wasnít able to plant as much of the main plot area as I had planned. Was able to plant about 1.5 acres in the main plot and
.

We also got in a small kill plot Sunday morning. Itís only about 25 yards wide and 40 yards long but it should be good late season as itís tucked back in the woods about 250 yards from the main food plot and 150 yards from a neighborís adjacent field. I can see them staging here just before sunset.

The morning after my planting I came to the conclusion that God did not destine me to be a farmer! Good Lord Iím sore.

Now we wait for rain!

The kids and I got a double stand up between the kill plot and the #2 feeder.

Finally, cycled the cams and am getting a little more activity.
The audio from my cams picked up some doe banter talking about the amazing golden nuggets from heaven.

The doe on the far right has some unusual coloring and what looks like bumps. Anyone have thoughts on the doe?

A few bucks have started showing up as well.

We will be back up the first weekend of bow season to get my daughter on a deer with her crossbow and do some final prep work on the blind. Youth weekend will be my 10 year old sonís first hunt as the trigger man!

Praying for a memorable season.

Yessss! That last buck is a good one! Things are looking good up your way. Has me excited to see more bucks at my place. I planted on 9/8 and got less than .1 inches of rain yesterday. Crossing my fingers for more rain this weekend. I think you timed it right!

Rice bran really works great in that area. Was just started to be used when I moved to Texas. No clue why but those hilly deer loved it. Of course, I did hunt two ridges south of you.

Itís about that time!

Little britches and I are heading North on Friday for our first hunting trip on the new place. This will be a Father Daughter trip as Mom and the rest of the crew have previous engagements. That works for Molly and me!

She has been practicing with the crossbow and should be ready to go if the weather cooperates.

The plan is to head up on Friday afternoon and hunt Saturday and Sunday. She has taken a doe with her .223 in 2016:
https://youtu.be/ObDPqZ_KNS8
https://youtu.be/wPxaum-ZwqU

And took her first doe with a crossbow last year:

She missed a mid to upper 120ís buck last year and wants to connect this year.

Also, Darton checked on he food plots about ten days ago and reported back that we have good growth on the main plot!

Weíve had favorable weather this past week so Iím expecting good growth. Molly and I will put out that exclusion cage to help gauge the utilization. Iím really interested in seeing how well the kill plot in the woods/staging area has done.

Iíll have the cameras rolling on our sits so it should be fun!

Made it to the cabin in time to let Molly practice a little more with the crossbow and run all but one of our cameras. Still have tons of does hitting the feeders and small bucks during the daytime. Older bucks are only coming in at night.

Molly wants a buck but the freezer is empty and we have a surplus of does so she has the green light for anything that walks.

Food plots are doing great. Pics to come tomorrow.

Praying to get a multi-hour sit in tomorrow morning.

We sat for a couple of hours in the slow, steady 54 degree rain. Iím proud of her for sticking with me. Sheís a trooper.

We had a 2.5 year old 6 point come through at 17 yards but he was just cruising.

Warming up and recovering.

Well we had an excellent morning sit. Weather was great and wind was favorable. The deer were moving West of us. We will be back up for the youth rife weekend on Saturday to get my son on his first deer.

Here is a view of the main plot.

Iím very pleased as it is doing well.

Will and I will be sitting in the black blind armed with the .223. Heís been practicing.

More to come.

Agree. Plots are looking great!

We rolled in the gate to the place around 8:30 this evening with anticipation. Will and I will be out for his first deer hunt behind the rifle tomorrow morning. Heís stoked but I can hardly sleep!!! Hoping for a very memorable morning. I was blessed to be sitting in the tree with my Dad when I shot my first deer. Doing the same with my boy will be special.

Special thanks to Darton. To top the odds more in Willís favor he stopped by the place yesterday to put out some rice bran and they have found it. Theyíve begun hammering it in the last 24 hours! Thanks for thinking of him.

We plan to be sitting the black blind overlooking the main food plot. More to come once we get settled in the AM.
