Angelfire in NM is great for beginners. The easy trail from the top to the bottom is three miles. You can ski at night, really less crowded. It’s not very crowded during the day.

Red River has been our go to for last several years. Typically go mid January. We didn’t go last year due to Covid and New Mexico’s tight restrictions. Ended up going to Purgatory. Skiing was great and kids had a great time. Only downside is from Durango to the mountain is about a 30 min drive. Awesome thing about Red River is the ability to walk from your condo / house to main drag in town. Everything is very close. So if you have folks who’d rather shop all day while you ski, it’s good for everyone.

Red River didn’t have much as far as restrictions go except for not getting to eat at the restaurants.

We are going again in January, our 3rd year.

Highly recommend Red River and not a bad drive to get there.

Snowmobiling options are available for your wife. We also do some cross country skiing in the area as well.

Go second half of January or February for best snow.
