As my hunt continued, with a Roan and Sable in the salt, I kept touch with my wife on Whatsapp, she told me of a bet with her brother and sister. Her brother and sister said that I would only take 3 animals that was listed in the price Harry gave me while my wife said I would kill more than 3. What she did next surprised me. While talking on Whatsapp on the 18th, she said that she would really like another Zebra rug! I was wanting one for a floor pedestal mount, BUT since she said she wanted a rug, a rug it would be.
For those that have not hunted Africa and even those that have hunted know that the Zebra is a very unpredictable animal, very skittish and there is no rhyme or reason for their actions. I have sat at water holes and done spot and stalk hunts for over 30 days with Harry over 3 hunts and had only had one shot at a Zebra (now a rug) and had only seen a group one more time at the water. On the morning of the 20th, Garry and I were setting at a water hole on Harry's Mom's place watching Gemsbock, Impala, Warthogs and a Giraffe family mill around and drink when low and behold a famiy group of about 15 to 20 Zebra came in from the left. There was a very big stallion in the group, but beig Zebra when one farted, coughed sneezed or made any noise, they all bolted. I had drawn on the stallion twice, but he would never stay put long enough or he was not in a good position. After watching thier antics for about 15 minutes the big stallion finally made it to the water at about 20 yards broadside. I drew, settled my sight on the spot I wanted to hit and let her fly. The 775 grain arrow tipped with the 220 grain Tuffhead zipped through him like a hot knife though butter. They all scattered and my wife had her a Zebra rug to be placed under our coffee table in what we call our big room (living room)!
My surprise animal was in the salt, the wife and I were estatic and I could now focus on my next and final critter, the Cape Buffalo!
Limpopo South Africa Part 4, The Buff! Tomorrow.
This is a very big stallion with very few scars and should make a huge and beautiful rug for our house.
