    Measuring Boat for Registration Purposes

I have a jon boat that was given to me. I have no title and no interest in titling it. Its an Alumacraft and its listed at 14 feet. However, when measured with a tape, its slightly shorter at 13' 10" (or there about). The registration laws say boats over 14 feet have to be registered. Non motorized boats under 14 feet do not have to be.

I would like to take it out in "public waters" (maybe even a state park) just to paddle around. It will not be motorized. I assume since it measures slightly under 14 feet I should be good to go. Does anyone have any experience with this or know how they measure boats?

It's not uncommon for boat builders to round up or down when it comes to length.

My title says 21 but it measures 21'4"

Correct. You can paddle that all you want to on public water with no registration needed.

Thank you! That's what I was hoping to hear.
