Default Hit a snag

Looking to see if some of the more knowledgeable trailer folks can help me out with a dilemma. I inherited a 16 ft trailer from my wives grand father. He last had it registered in 1986. I re did the whole thing. I went today to have it inspected by the regional tdmv vehicle crimes task force to get a form 68A. I thought it would be easy to get that form because I was told by my county office they could just register it as a homemade trailer and Iíd be good to go. WRONG! It was obviously a manufactured trailer so now I need to figure out the year and make of the trailer before they will give me that form. If not it sounds like a pain in e arse to get it registered as I will have to appear in district court and hire an attorney to get it all sorted out. Here are the issues I canít find any paper work on it and when they run the vin or the plates it comes back with nothing. Itís been 35 years since itís been registered. Iím planning on using it on my farm and will be getting farm plates for it if I ever can. Here is a look at the before and after a in the picture. Any advice? Or does anyone know what brand of trailer it could have been. Iím pretty sure itís an 1984 judging by the stickers that are on the plate.

You need to tell the county office you were mistaken that it is home made. I think they were trying to help you get it registered.

Next time, don't use those helium filled boards/tires....makes the trailer float upside down.

Yes sir that’s what I was trying to do. But when I took it to have it inspected for that form 68A the officers wouldn’t register it like that because they said no it’s a manufactured trailer.

OMG< i went through this and it was a Pain in the Arse! They had to do a title search, then I had to go get it weighed, then I had to order some dies to put a trailer code on frame in a certain place, then I needed to register it. PIA

Just register as homemade and call it done.

Should have registered as a homemade. In and out in 10 minutes. Go register at a different office now. Unless they have multiple clerks, go to a different one.

Could you randomly assign a year model and manufacturer? 1984 Big Tex for instance?

I believe you have to register it in the county you live in. At least Montgomery County that's the rule. And their is only one place in Montgomery county to get it inspected. I'm not sure what county the OP is in.

Yes sir thatís correct. I live in Wilson county but have to have it inspected in San Antonio. I guess I could go to corpus or Austin.

Not so simple to do so anymore, in many counties you have to take it in for an inspection usually a close major city with a stolen vehicle division who inspect and look over the trailer for identifying marks and VIN number to check it against their database of stolen trailers.

If attempting to classify as homemade they will determine based on the construction if it is or not. As the OP stated happened to him.

To have it registered as homemade it has to pass the inspection as such to get 68a form along with the rest of the certified weight, pictures, and appraisal to get the paperwork from the DMV that allows you to purchase a bonded title

After all that you can you go get your registration and plate.

Okay, Iíve heard of this!!!
Give it to your buddy who lives in Llano or Brady or BF Tx.
Have him get the plates, Then sell it to you for $250.00.
You go transfer it to your name.
Done Deal.
Have Heard of This Working!!

Thats what I'd suggest.

Every county is different. Some will register homemade without inspection some won't.

Why not register it as farm use and then you dont have to get it inspected or weighed?
That is how I got around all of it when my F-I-L passed away and I got his trailer.

Yep must be different counties. I just did this and have done it multiple times. As long as the trailer gross isnít above 4500lbs I think in my county it does not have to be inspected.

You have a VIN?

Post it up without the last 4 or 5 digits. Maybe someone will recognize the manufacturer.

Then if they are still in business you might be able to get some info from them

Anti theft folks don't sound too helpful if you gave them the whole story and they can't find anything on it.

Most vin# contain a year code in it. I believe it is the 10 or 11 digit. That should at least give you the year

No sir no vin or information plate at all. There is a nine digit number that has been stamped in with dies on the tongue but thatís it.

I was talking to a relative last night that said that 9 digit number could have been someone’s social security number that people back in the day used to put that on their items in case they were stolen. Just a thought.

Buy you another trailer and just trade back and fourth!!! At least that's the way we used to do it, lol...!! Just kidding, don't do that. Wilson county is usually easy to deal with, good luck if you get the wrong lady because there are a few of them there.

Looking at the before pic I could easily see that being a home built trailer.

I was thinking the same thing. Made with round pipe. Did you show them the picture before you fixed it up. Say you built it with scrap metal and show them the first rusty pic. You just made it to purty.

FWIW there wasn't a standard number of numbers in a vin till like 1981 or so.

So the 9 digits are just that. I have a 78 boat trailer I converted to a kayak trailer that's only 9.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it is, just saying it could be. First thing that caught my eye was that the front pipe cross rail looks to be open ended. Hard to tell from the pic tho so I could be wrong. Most manufactured trailers are capped on the ends if not mitered. Look at the cuts at the ends of the supports and all the welds too. Do they all look uniform? Tell em your dad built it 35 years ago and only used it on the farm and never on the street so never was registered. Show em the before pic as proof. I'm no expert tho so take it for what it's worth.
I did sleep in Holiday Inn express once tho!
Good luck!
I've got the same issue with a canoe I want to put a motor on but no title or bill of sale. They will run the VIN and tell me if ever registered, just not to who if it ever was. I haven't gotten that far yet tho.

I have four trailers. 2 flatbed, 1 livestock, and one smoker. Last time one was registered was about 8 years ago when I bought the livestock trailer new. I pull 3 or 4 times a week. Never had an issue.

That before pic should show that it very well could have been a homemade trailer and the "VIN" number could have been anything. SS#, phone number, birth date etc.

Bring it up to me and leave it a few months

When you come back I will have it registered in my name and sell to you for $200 (cost of registering and my time) with a bill of sale that will allow you to take it home and get it registered in your name
