It means, I'm sorry to hear that (it happened). Not I'm sorry you told me.
It's the world we live in now, where the "victim mentality" wants to disect every word and try to find a way to be a victim of everything rather than finding the good and being uplifted by it.

Nah. I have enough real things in life for guilt to pummel my self worth with.

                  That's what I thought too.
About 11 years ago a bunch of guys I served with in Naples Italy with got together for our 1st annual reunion. One of my close friends, not sure I can call him that as well don't keep in touch much, was there.
We stayed up one night talking and catching up on life.
I found out he had a Daughter and she was the apple of his eye. Unfortunately mom and him didn't get along so he didn't get to see her much while he was homeless.
                  I was shocked at!
I knew he was adopted and some of his struggles around that.
Anyways he studied Psychology in college to understand people better.
He is the one who told me what I shared in my initial post.
I chose then to change the way I reply.

I was just wondering if anyone else ever thought about it.

I told him that I'll never change my phone number. You need me call me we'll figure it out together.

Last I heard he was in the Army and was the Base CO's Driver.

Matter of fact I'm going to text him see where he is tonight.
