Really? I’ve never had elk meat. Well I have but not as readily available like I do axis. My family uses a lot of hamburger and kill 1-2 axis a year just for hamburger.

the alfalfa farmers in Utah will get a boat load of depredation tags and they go for $6-800 a pop but generally no lodging or anything like that. this is after the season Dec-Jan. COLD.

Yes really! A cow elk is about 450 lbs live weight. An Axis is 130 lbs. both are delicious meat.

My theory is the bigger the animal, the better the venison

I was looking for quality, not quantity, but if elk is as good as axis, I’m game.

I killed a New Mexico cow. Could not tell the difference between that and beef. That was some pretty good stuff!!!!
Now on the other hand, I’ve never have tried Axis but for the amount of meat, I would go with elk.

I gave away 5 of them about 15 yrs ago, they cost 500 a piece when I bought them. Before the market crashed they were 5k each, too many jumped in at the same time

We used to eat Whitetail a lot !
Then we ate Axis a lot.
Now we eat Elk a lot.
My vote is Elk for best flavor, volume, value.

So anyone got the hookup on a reasonable priced elk cow?

With Elk you get both. It’s excellent meat. Elk and Axis are my two favorite.

Ive got just under 2k acres in southern Colorado (unit 85) that Id lease out to a group of 2-3 for 6th season, Dec 1-11. Its a DIY hunt. No lodging but plenty hotels close by. Its a draw and you have till April 5th to send in. 2 hunters at 1k apiece.
