    Thumb joint rebuild

Yep, you read that right. My doctor says when I am ready, my right thumb needs to be rebuilt. Has anyone had such a procedure? Hep me decide when it is time and if it is really worth it.

Also, I have carpel tunnel in my left wrist, also needing surgery. Which should I do first? I am thinking left, because it will heal much faster and doesn't require a cast for 6 weeks.

I rebuilt my own thumb and index finger. Don’t do it the way I did.

Had my left thumb rebuilt because I fell and broke it. Dr. used pins to fix it and it works fine. Had carpel tunnels release surgery on my right wrist it worked great. Also had trigger finger release surgery. I will say that all the surgeries were performed by a hand specialist and his method was some type of micro lap technique. Small incisions.

DryCreek - you might go talk to a hand specialist! That is the main reason for doing it.

I fell last November and ended up with a torn ligament in my right thumb. Doc called it "skier's thumb". But he kept saying, "you have A LOT of arthritis in your thumb!" He said when I was ready, "he would be happy to rebuild it and make it all better, shave off that arthritis and fix it right up!"
Made it sound like a simple thing. Then I found out, cast for 6 weeks. So I asked around and found out that it is a reconstruction by taking a ligament from my forearm, running it through a small hole in my wrist and wrapping it around a tiny button that he will install. Oh heck no!
But then last week my primary doc asked if I knew anyone who had done it and said she had several patients that did it. Every one of them said they wish they had done it sooner.
I've already had carpel tunnel release in my right wrist and I am dominantly right handed.
I figured since competitive archery season is pretty much in File 13, if I do it now, I should be good for hunting season, right? And maybe I should do it before the Real Texas Summer heat arrives?

How long did it take to be close to normal again after the rebuild? Did you get back to full range of motion?

I broke my thumb in front of the first knuckle and dislocated it. The Dr. put screws and pins to fix the brake and then went back in to remove the hardware I think. Anyway, did physical therapy after that. Probably about a month of therapy and was back to normal thumb function.
