    Mammoth Knife Build

Only sharing this as I thought some might be interested to see some beautiful mammoth tusk pieces as well as a small glimpse into the build itself. Photos below show the hollow grind of the blade and hollowing out of the handle to allow some grip to the epoxy.

I did a big taper on the blade to the butt end and decided to peen nickel pins on this piece to add to the look with a rounded peening hammer. Tonight it will get a little more hand sanding then final polish of the handle and sharpening.....thanks for taking a peak along the journey...

Is the blue color in the scales natural?

                Thanks!
Yes I believe in this set it’s a coloring biproduct of the minerals that surrounded the tusk. You’ll see natural coloring on the outside ranging from white to blue green and bark brown. Cross cut pieces are occasionally died all sorts of various colors from reds to purple etc…

Thanks Sam. I found that piece at last year's Forged in Fire show. He had reasonable prices on most of the tusk and tooth there.

                            Gorgeous.

Question....how hard is it to work with the mammoth? Is it brittle or require any special tools for drilling/polishing?
