Saw a commercial on the pursuit channel, something like 7 states one caliber...looked like they went from Texas and up to Montana.
I am bored and was curious if you could only have one rifle/caliber to hunt all of the US what would it be? Everything from Javies and Coues deer to Elk, Moose and grizzly. I am a serious .308 fan down here in Texas but, I believe I would go with a 7 mag with a really heavy bullet. What's your pick? |

6.5 prc, or 7 mag would be my top choices. But would be fine with 6.5 creedmoor or 7mm-08, 284, 270 and many others.

Holland’s .375. One rifle; one planet.
Or a .338 Win Mag or .340 Weatherby or 8mm Remington Magnum. But I think bigger is better. |

Lately I’ve been on a .270 Winchester kick and it has yet to disappoint.
However, if I were limited to only one rifle to get things done I would choose either a 30-06 or a .338 Winchester Magnum. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

If you take bear and moose off the hunting menu you can use a lot less gun. Without those on the list, I’d my .30-06 with a 168 TSX. But any .30 cal with good bullets will do.

For one gun do all in the lower 48 300 win mag would be hard to beat sure there are faster 30’s but they come with added recoil cost of ammo and ammo availability.

I don't discount any of the mentioned calibers. Even the diminutive. 223/5.56. You can kill with it. Just the amount of blood leaking is also something I look at with calibers. If you're going to brain pan shoot all of the critters caliber can become a much less critical choice. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk |

I'm a big .308 fan, it's a popular caliber and ammo is easy to find and it is a very accurate round. There is a reason the olympic big bore shooters use the .308.

Nothing wrong with the 30-06, been around for a looong time. It can be loaded with 110 gr to 220 gr bullets. And by the way, ammo can be found everywhere (well maybe not right now) but you get the point.

Some of you boys are crazy. I ain’t chasing grizzlies with anything less than a 300. Take that off the requirement list and it’s a different ballgame.

Well I'm reading all the posts and it seems to me that alot of you guys aren't actually thinking about the actual question, One gun for ALL of NA. from Javies to Moose and Griz. Don't think I would be going after Javies or Coues deer with a 30 cal you waste too much meat. A big coues deer will weigh around 80lbs. My go to caliber would be a 7mm mag.
No flaming this is MY opinion. |
