We (CHarrell71, gwellstx, and I) got drawn for gun deer either sex Jan 12-14! Woohoo!!!!

How does this hunt work? Assigned compartment I assume.

Would a .257 Weatherby spitting out 115 Berger VLD be enough for a big Sambar stag?

Did NOT draw again this year. Will be trying again as a standby though since it’s only a few miles from the house.

Compartment. My BIL and I did this hunt last year. There were two stands in our compartment. Luck of the draw my BIL shot a nice Sambat stag the first morning. I didn't see anything but cows where I was. Moved to his stand with him the last morning and saw a Sambar cow but couldn't get turned and on her before she went back in the brush.

Saw axis, sambar, and white tail brought in. High percentage that you will get something.

Don’t sit it the stands as they are not in good spots. Walk the roads in your compartment slowly and quietly paying special attention to any water and any big openings in the brush you can see, they love to have there feet wet. Don’t shoot the first Sambar that you see because you will see more.. They are loaded. It’s the best hunt I’ve ever been on and I’m telling you from experience don’t shoot the first stag you see Unless he’s a great one because you will see more. Axis are they but not as many and not in every unit. On the 2nd and 3rd day don’t be afraid to ask the staff if you can switch units because a lot of hunters will leave after getting there stag and you can get into other areas that may have axis.

I read the thread about hunting Aransas National Refuge with its big gators, big snakes, and clouds of mosquitoes. Is the Powderhorn any different?

They are not far from each other and they are both coastal.

The .257 will likely be good enough. Even with bigger Guns the biologists there will tell you to neck shoot them. They have had better recovery rates doing that.

I'll do my best to go as live as possible. Guess I need to download tapacrap and get familiar with using it. I have plenty of time to figure it out. Being only 5 miles outside POC we should have pretty good cell service.

I got drawn for the 10/27-29 hunt. 27 points used so super excited after applying for GDE all those years. Normally put in for the Chap, but switched over the the Powderhorn due to the Sambar opportunity.

We are getting our list checked off for the youth hunt this weekend. Will be taking my youngest daughter on her first tpwd hunt. Seems like it’s a very short hunt for the youth, basically a day and a half. Anyone that’s been on the youth hunt have any tips or suggestions on things we need to make sure and bring other than the usual.

Has anyone been on the youth portion of this hunt before. Was curious if it operated a little different than the regular hunt. Paperwork says we will have assigned blinds and to bring corn.

Are we required to stay in the blinds or are we allowed to hunt our compartment. Sitting over a pile of corn gets boring after about 30 seconds. All questions I can ask once I get there but just wondering.

I’ve got my bug spray packed and mud boots, anything else that’s essential beyond the usual?

Not sure, but it does say by blind and not compartment. If you have that evil bookface, then you can shoot the staff at the WMA a message. Dan is a good guy and will answer promptly even if he does give grid coordinates to a small island off the coast of Antarctica.

Backstory: He had posted a pic of several sambar in a water tank. I popped off in jest asking about coordinates for the water tank. He said he doesn't usually do it, but made an exception. They were coords for a remote island.

Love that place, been driving by it for many years while fishing at POC.

I went down for standby in January of 19 which was one of the first hunts along with 50 of my best friends for 2 standby spots.

Well we made it a whole 20 minutes into the hunt. She spotted him bedded down right at 100 yards. He stood up and she dropped him right where he stood. Needless to say she was a little excited!

Sure did. We saw a stud Sambar on the initial drive into the unit but we jumped him. Congrats bigharge! I’ve heard several shots within an hour of making it to our unit.
