      Interesting development...
I’ve been applying wax to the barrel daily and with the humidity lately, I noticed a fresh layer of scale starting to develop. The barrel was crusty.

Evidently I didn’t neutralize the acid enough to stop the process.

So tomorrow after work, I’m grabbing some 0000 steel wool and some baking soda and it’s getting a really good scrub in baking soda water

      Seriously fascinating.

Kinda bummed but kinda excited to see what its going to look like this time.

I remember having issues with the browning process also. I know I ended up doing it two or three times. And still had to keep it heavily oiled so as not to “ scale” or look bloochy.

Washed in backing soda and water

Wet sanding with 2000 grit till I feel a slick surface
              Removing rust scale.

              Barrel is dark underneath

Think we are getting close to the win category.

Gonna see if the rust tries to come back.
Most of the scale is gone. Barrel is starting to get that mirror feel.
Will do one more light baking soda water sanding and then let it dry good.

                  I’m happy.
                  This looks much better!
Second wet sanding with 2000 and alkaline water.
Then good soap and water scrub.

Going to let to dry a few hours and see.
If I don’t see any rust by this evening, I’ll rewax. And I think this is good to go finally.

Fit it as tight as I could
                        It snapped in to place.

                        Just epoxied it in place.

Got some antler cut for pin inlays.

I boogered a couple holes so this is my fix for that.
Should look cool and also strengthen the hole some.

I’m thinking about rounding everything like the piece on the stock. Thin em out nicely and get em nice and flat.

                            Did 3 coats of aquafortis
Coated, and heated over the stove to turn brown
                            Sanded with 2000 grit
                            Repeat

                            Antler inlay looks cool.

                            One coat of oil on.

Decided to put the inlay stuff on hold till I figure out what I want to do.

The spots that I messed up when I drilled the pin holes, I plugged with a wood skewer that I tapered down to fit.
I then cut and sanded flush.

                                Aquafortis time!

Still have stuff I want to do, like antler inlays but with this aquafortis, if I need to sand, etc. it’s kinda hard to mess the finish up. Just sand and re-oil...

Here’s what she looks like so far.
Lots of hand oiling to go!
