    Rifle Recommendations?

    Hello all,

I am looking to get into my first hunting rifle and would like some input from the green screen. I am currently living in Wyoming for school and want to do some Elk and antelope hunting in the coming years and want something fairly versatile. What rifle caliber would you go with?

300 win mag will be a very versatile caliber.

Do a search on here, and read until you're hearts content.
      You're polling 70k+ and we'll recommend everything from a 218 Bee to 577 NE

For a 1st rifle to do it all I'd go with a 30 cal something, probably a 308 or an '06.

I would stick to a 30-06. You will have an all around rifle.

            7mm magnum, 270, 30/06

            Versital
            Generally flat shooting
            Manageable recoil
            Easy to find ammo.

The first hunting rifle part would lead me to stay away from suggesting a harder hitting round than the 7mm or 30/06

270 is a all around balanced caliber for your situation
I’ve hunted out west for both of the species you mentioned & had 1 shot hunts & done
                Good luck

3006 I know it is old but it shoots flatter than most realize, has manageable recoil, and 30 caliber has the biggest bullet selection available. Also I am pretty sure it still has the most available factory loading to match ammo to game hunted. Although for deer and deer size game a simple cup and core style 150 grain bullet is about perfect (i think it IS perfect) and cost little.

Whatever you get, get a 22 LR too to practice with if you don't already have one and practice from field positions, not just off a bench.

                  Good Luck!!!

Love my 30-06. Does everything I need it to.

Personally the 264 win mag is outstanding but ammo selection in the store is tough.

Past that I’d give the nod to the 7mag and then the 3006. Both have a great ammo selection in the stores and you can find it almost anywhere.
