    Subsonic Fail Again…

Posted a week ago with a suspect shot on a pig. Did some ballistic testing and confirmed zero and tested drop at a few different yardages.

Took this shot at close to 100 yards. Confident it should have been a hit but the pig didn’t seem to miss a beat running off. Any chance it died in the woods?

Unless y’all can see a major flaw I may have to give up this subsonic hunting life.

A head shot you definitely hit vs a neck shot you may have hit.

If you want to hunt with subs you need to test exactly where the hit every 25 yards - 25-50-75-100 etc then you need to know your distance to the target just like a bow, then you shoot them high heart this will pass through arteries and lungs leaving some blood to follow.

They don't fail, they just don't create shock like a normal bullet pretend you are bow hunting with a 1" cut 2 blade.

Hunting with subs you need a wide nose bullet or find a reliable expanding soft cast. I’ve killed hogs with sub sonic 300blk at 90-100 yards shot right in the “V” had full penetration and the hog only went 30 yards but it was a wide nose 265gr hard cast bullet. The hog didn’t know he was hit and just fell over. Honestly I didn’t think I hit him either.

I’ve also killed hogs with soft cast HP 44mag loaded at 1000fps had full pass through at 100yards pig was only 40lbs but it anchored him.

The only way to get more deadly sub loads is weight of projectiles and wide meplats or spend big money on jacket bullets that are proven to expand. Remember speed kills.

In the first video it was a high shoulder shot with the pig angled away, not a good hit even with a deer rifle. The second video was a head shot, almost any round would have worked.

As far as giving up on the subs, you need to pick your shots. I would keep it to headshots only or a good broadside low and forward at shorter ranges. Otherwise, you're going to continue to be disappointed in the subsonic 300. If you want something that gives you more leeway, you'll need to step it up to one of the big bores.

get a better sub round to use, 44 mag, 450 bushmaster or 458 socom and go heavy bullet weights!

Looks like you need to just shoot hogs with buckshot or maybe a .338 lapua ? First vid you can tell it was not a head shot. 12 gauge buckshot would have killed em though good luck

I think you hit that first one high in the neck, quartered away. Nothing but meat.

I think the only subs I’d hunt with are made by Maker. They’re Maker REX bullets. Even using those I likely wouldn’t shoot past 75 yards…possibly 100 yards max.
