6.5 is a paper puncher. .308 for hunting and for a short barrel.

308 going to be better and more forgiving in a 16" Barrel. 6.5 CM i would say needs minimum 18" to reach potential and ideally 22" or 24" to reach full potential. That said, I have an 18" AR15 223 and the longer barrel with suppressor isn't very noticeable compared to 16".

I recently was in the same boat deciding between 308/16" and 6.5 CM/18" for hunting and went with the .308 in 16" barrel and love it. Inside 500 yards, they're both very similar.

How thick was the barrel at that point?

I was about to suggest this caliber as well. I succumbed to the 7mm-08 hype 2 years ago and am so glad I did.

7-08 gets my vote as well. If you’re set on 6.5/308 then 308 is the way to go.

It’s 20 inches but my Tikka CTR .308 with a Nomad is a joy to shoot.

I went ahead with the 6.5. Ultimately, I decided that the every day shootability and lower recoil held more value for me than the increased thump and frontal area for a "maybe" elk hunt. Not like I don't have other rifles I can pull out for larger game if needed.

Or, worst case scenario, I'll just end up having to buy an additional gun... dang the luck!
