2022 Matador WMA Turkey Hunt - Live! - TexasBowhunter.com Community Discussion Forums

Headed out tomorrow morning at 5:30am for this hunt.

Received a notification in mid November 2021 that I was successful in the draw, with (7) points for this hunt.

The plan is to arrive by 11:00am for the orientation, determine which pasture I will be assigned, and begin scouting.

Hunt concludes at 12:00pm on Friday, 4/22.

I will try to keep this as live as possible.

First time being drawn for a TPWD drawn hunt, I’m really excited!

Good luck we did this hunt last year, it sure wasn’t the place I remembered 20 years ago. The brush control measures really changed the landscape, we hunted the middle pasture this side of the aermotor chased one turkey the entire hunt. Had a great time but was pretty disappointed with the brush management practices.

Probably in one of the worst droughts I’ve seen in a long time out there.
Exceptional drought.
1.58” total rainfall since October 1st, 2021 at the WMA headquarters.

I’d hunt the pastures with the pease river, or if you can find roosting trees.

Orientation and check in has been completed!

I drew the Lone Canyon pasture, which fronts the Middle Pease River for about (1) mile.

Spent the afternoon familiarizing myself with the pasture, and getting the lay of the land.

The canyon runs North/South for the length of the pasture, and I’m hoping I’m about 1/4 mile from their roosting area.

Extremely hot at this point, and haven’t seen any movement.

Overlooking the canyon now to try and get a bead on them.

It’s hot indeed. I’m in Samson, next to Luke’s compartment. Hiked down to the bluffs overlooking the river and found the only shade in the county for a nap.

Gonna stay up top and glass the river this afternoon/evening and try to spot some birds.

Birds were gobbling this morning. Cool and calm. Couldn’t get one to commit. Looks like the guys near me got one of the birds I heard.

Should’ve brought my fly rod. This “river” is full of fish.

It’s a jetboil brand. Pretty awesome setup. Can also use the stove with other mess kits, but it’s got a pan with it.
