Without knowing that scenario, this problem is not solvable. If your son did not pick up that clue, he may be missing the info he needs to solve the problem.

Not picking on you or your son, but I taught college level Mathematics, for four years. The biggest problem most of my students had was a "reading comprehension problem", not a "Math Skills problem."

It gives the trajectory of the ball y(height) vs x(distance). What you care about is the slope of that line, specifically at the very beginning, x = 0. To find the slope of a curved line you use derivatives. Basically how y is changing versus x as the x approaches 0, rise over run, which is the derivative. Derivative of Y = -0.004x2+1.6x is -0.008x +1.6

Now plug in x=0, the rise is 1.6. Tangent of rise over run is the angle, 57.99.

I had to take one semester of Caculus at A&M. The prof said don't worry- it will all make sense when you take the second semester. I wasn't that **** curious...

Can't answer b or c without Vo (initial velocity).

b) time of flight simply requires rearranging x(t) equation to t=(x/...). Then put in theta =57.99 from above deriv, Vo and x=400, which is the distance along x to where the ball landed, that calculates the time t where the ball lands.

c) I'd have to do some writing on paper, you have x(t) and y(t) which are positions related to time, each accelerations in their own axis. You care about combined velocity of both x(range) and y(height). So I think you need to sqrt(x^2+y^2) into one equation, then take derivative at x=400 to get velocity at that time. Not highly confident in this, would need to write it out and see what numbers show.
