Congrats, my son drew as well. Great that it’s after football season! We were down there years ago for Tyhp when it was first acquired but things have probably changed a bit since then.

My daughter wasn't selected. She only had 2 points. How many did y'all have? We plan to go down to try for standby, if there are any...

H and Oakley missed out on the GDE youth draw. Good luck to your boys.

I didn't figure they would since they both drew Colorado Bend, GDE last season.

I went with my daughter last year. It was really hot, we only saw one Samba deer while getting setup in the blind. Didn't see another one the whole weekend. We decided to do a little noon stalk and got a white-tailed doe.
Got a nice Axis buck that came out of the brush about 10 yards from us, looks us and ran away!.
There were several Samba deer harvest that weekend.
We stayed at Holiday Inn express in Port Lavaca

Good question on points, too many categories and too many applicants in my group to keep track of that! Our dates are 1/22-1/23

Don’t be afraid to move around Sambar are very stockable and also if you aren’t seeing a lot of movement don’t be afraid to ask for a unit change on the second or third day a lot of guys leave by then and you can get into a different/possibly better unit and trust me not all units are equal and only a few hold the axis deer.

Awesome, I’m hoping my son gets drawn in the next couple of years, we have a bay house just across Powderhorn lake from the ranch, get to see all kinds of animals in the evening off our porch.

We get to see a lot of axis on the shoreline across the lake.

Good luck.

i just noticed that it says "assigned blind" on the hunt description...anyone that has done the youth hunt, does this mean we cant spot and stalk or get out and walk around? how strict are they with this?

Default My boys drew Powderhorn

When we were there last year with my daughter they assigned us compartments with a blind. Most sat in the blind but you had the option to hunt your compartment as well. Some compartments were setup better to hunt spot and stalk and others were better suited for a blind sit

My Kids were drawn for this year also (January 22 and 23) and I spoke with my brother who did this hunt with his daughter and was told that youth hunts they assign blinds and adult hunts they assign compartments. I'm not sure how strict they are on this.
Hope this helps.

yeah, from what i have read on here from people that have hunted there, sitting in the blind doesnt sound like the best strategy.

The boys are 2 for 2 on sambar after day1, back in the stand now looking for axis or a nice whitetail buck. Logan killed a spike and Brock killed a beast of a 3x3 right at dark, field dressed 335lbs.

Thanks everyone, it was a great day...

Logan and I were in stand 20 when he shot the spike, Brock was east of us in 19. They shot the 3x3 while glassing between 19 And 20 though.

My buddy Travis has been "guilding" Brock so we could split up and cover more ground...they were in 5 this morning and saw a big buck, they are guessing 140s, and Brock just couldn't find him in the scope...one of us will be back out there this afternoon.

Logan and I sat in 8 this morning, looking for axis or whitetail, only saw 2 doe.
