    Oak identification

My buddy thinks this is a White oak. I’m convince it’s not a white oak. The bark is more of a pin oak look, leaf configuration suggest red oak. This is on the bank of a river. What kind of oak is this?

Yep, red oak. Bristles on the end of the lobes also helps to identify.

Red oak no doubt about it. Could be a pin oak. The leaf also reminds me of a shumard

Sorta close, a Pin Oak is a type of Red Oak .
It's definitely a Pin Oak based on the number of lobes, and the direction the lobes are growing.

Red oaks and white oaks are each large classes of many oak species. With a few exceptions, white oaks have rounded tips and red oaks are pointed. Yours is not a white oak, or a water oak. Reds can be hard to distinguish.

Edit: Think I’ll vote shumard oak.

                          Not a water oak.
Water oak has a smaller leaf shaped similar to a duck foot. aka duck foot oak.

Where I come from, nowhere near what we call a Pin Oak.
                            Red oak for sure.
Now people say deer prefer white oaks over red oaks. I know of one red oak on our place when it’s dropping acorns, the deer flock to it.
