MDF Wheels For Bench Grinder Sharpening

I thought it best to make a new topic for this.

For those who were/are interested in making the sharpening wheels to use on a bench grinder from the MDF particle board:

    Don't waste your time.
I wasted mine, so you wouldn't have to.

I have all the tools to make a perfect wheel, was interested, so I did.

It works to some degree, but nowhere near as good as the laminated cardboard wheels.

Also (as I suspected it would), it gets the blade pretty hot even if using very light pressure, so if you have a problem with being heavy handed you'll likely ruin your blade.

I know they are expensive, but you'll be much better off to buy the Razor Sharp Sharpening System wheels, and be done with it. They last for years (forever if you don't gouge them out), and they are very easy to regrit when needed.

Hope some will find this information useful.

    Rick

Nice of you to fall on the sword, so to speak, so that we don't have to.

LOL, don't pat me on the back to hard.
I love saving money as much as the next guy,
but this turned out to Not Be one of those better things to do.

      Rick

      P.S.
I'm also still pretty skeptical as to how well the MDF wheels will hold up to high rpm over a period of time.

The card board wheels are a miracle for those of us who are sharpening challenged.
I offset the costs by charging the guys at work $1.00 per blade to sharpen their pocket knives.
