Default One done, onto the next one . . .

Well sitting in Atlanta waiting to catch my hop to DFW and figure I may as well get a thread started on my next adventure.

I leased a cabin and 355 acres in western Missouri for the first week of their whitetail season. I'll be fighting the ticks and mosquitoes. A ThermaCELL will be in use as well as permethrin on my clothes.
I'll have an any deer tag as well as an antlerless tag to work with and plan to add to my freezer and hopefully a decent buck if possible.

He has 6 stands in place but will tweak as sign and movement dictate.
Not a safari for sure but hopefully it will make the quick turn around worth the whole. I'll update here as much as possible.

Sounds like a nice hunt. Do you ever work?

I'm about ready to quite my deer lease and just do guided hunts on good ranches. Missouri would be nice.

Headed to fix a boat lift here in a minute. I'm retired from the City of Fort Worth and now run a business. And yes, it's challenging running crews from northern South Africa.

About 45 minutes south of KC. Got a little later start than I'd like but some things you don't control. Kenny said he'd show me a stand this evening I can get to easily tomorrow morning so we shall see. Gonna be warm and I'm glad I brought the Thermacells.

Had a doe fawn come by at 3 yards. Seen 3 other deer out a ways real early. May turn out okay.

In a little four corners spot along a dry creek. Saw a deer earlier but it was walking into my scent stream and although I never heard it blow it never got down the draw to me. It's warm and fairly humid. The solid rain from earlier made sure of that.
Gets dark an hour earlier here even though it is also CST here. After that sun sets it gets dark in the timber quick. I'll pick a different stand in the morning though .

Sat a new stand on a ridge between two wooded draws last night. Had a doe and fawn come by me late. May should have shot her. Fawns have no spots here and I know it would be okay most likely but I kinda have avoided killing doe with fawn early in season over the last few years.
May have to get over that.
Mid 80s last night. 70ish this morning. Gonna his a stand called the gap this morning. We'll see.

Well momma used to tell me no news is good news but in this case I'd have to disagree.
I see deer but it's usually coming and going. Honestly the biggest issue is mobility. His stands are in locations that seem good and probably will be at some point during the season. This time of year here you have to move to adjust for what they have decided to feed on. Be it planted crops, clover or mast dropping. Most of the stands are in the timber and that probably is great when the acorns are raining down or the rut is going on. Right now though they are hitting clover and ag crops.
So I went up to my place and picked up a folding tripod and I'm fixin ta go put it up. Today I'll set it on a tank as it's gonna be a pretty warm afternoon. I may pull it after that and put it down in a corner where I've seen some feeding in the morning on the mowed edge of some CRP where there is a bunch of clover sown in.
This isn't sitting on a feeder in Texas.
So I gotta work at it a little and hope I figure it out, and get a little lucky, before my time runs out here

Tight quarters tonight. Pond to the west in the timber, draw to the east in the timber. I'm on a ten foot portable tripod set up under a huge oak and it will be a miracle if any deer doesn't pic me off drawing my bow. But first one has to come by. Acorns, cover and water. Tracks in mud at pond. We'll see.

Well, had a doe come by just before sunset. She had a fawn but she was not a big doe. Probably last year's deer. She went by to the water at 23 yards. I did have a lane there for that trail but it is small and she never stopped. After they watered they came back my way and turned left to go behind me at 12 yards. The doe stopped where a tree blocked her vitals as the fawn scrounged for acorns. Finally they move off behind me.
A few minutes later they crossed back behind me and the fawn circled out front munching on more acorns. Soon the doe was behind me and stopped just out of my ability to turn and shoot her. This goes on til almost dark when the fawn runs back over to her and starts nursing making little gulping noises as she slurps it down.
I sat there til they fed off down the hill then packed it up for the evening.

Thanx!
Moved the tripod as the winds have changed. Looks and feels like cooler weather is coming. Only 80 for a high today. I'll get in early this afternoon and hope that something comes into that big oak dropping big acorns like rain. Slow them down on the way to the pond.

Has the turkeys moving. Heard a coon fight just before shooting light. But no deer yet. Plenty around I just should have brought more stands but the quick turn around I was not prepared.

Saw a few deer this morning including a decent 8. I had gotten out of stand and kneeling in a blow down as I scanned this bottom next to this corn field. They'd walk the fence line on the other side, jump it, walk towards me then disappear. Turns out they are using the wash as a travel route.
So now I'm in a bored lock on stand about 18 feet up to the platform and hoping I can pull something out of this.

Fence crossing on left in pic, wash on right. Name: IMG_20220922_154803_HDR.jpg

Well, this one circled to a crossing under me, decide it was too steep. Or something and step back and hesitated quartering slightly to me.
11 yard shot. She went about 15 yards and I watched her go down. Name: IMG_20220922_202100.jpg

Appreciate it.
One tag left. Up early. Even though cutting up and cleaning and going to get ice had me up later than this fatboy likes Gonna go back and see if maybe one is gonna ride my side of the creek. If not I'll move it for the evening hunt.
Regardless it's been a good time.
