Default Let's make a fishing lure

I'm going to try to show my attempt at building a jointed wake bait out of poplar. I've made a few won lures but I'm more of a soft plastic guy. First I'll draw it up. I want a longer style lure like a top water type. I've been catching quite a few redfish on wakers lately so I want to make one of my own.

Once I got the shape the way I like I cut the tape and extended the lure about a 1/4" to have room for the joint.

I cut it out on the band saw. Then I'll sand to the line.

I hope I don't screw it up lol. I mark it for the chamfer and will carve the edges with a box cutter

Carved the edges and did a lot of sanding. Poplar is a good wood to use for this, it's got a tight grain and sands well.

I drilled a hole thru the lure to mark where the eyes will be. This way they will be even. I also cut the slot for the bill whole it was still square.

Next I drilled a 3/8" hole for the weight, this is to make it stay upright while sitting in the water. I put an 1/8 oz split shot and some lead from a 7 1/2 shot 12 gauge round to fill the void. I filled it with sawdust and superglue. Then sanded it smooth.

After all that sanding now the scary part. Cutting it in half. I cut it midway of the lure. I'm hoping the joint will exaggerate the wobble of the near vertical bill. The bill angle is 85 degrees so it's pretty straight down.

Next I used a Dremel tool round both ends to match. I'll drill a hole for a pin and put a slot for a screw eye.

I twisted a screw eye and a pin. I used the Dremel to cut a slot in the middle of the front, the screw eye ( in the middle of the back) goes into the slot and the pin goes thru it, this makes the joint.

Cool thread. Bet that thing will catch fish when you get er finished out all the way.

I'm reminded of meeting Jack Smithwick, of the Devil's Horse line of lures. He was a high school classmate of my Dad's, and we toured his factory once. He showed us the first lure he made -- whittled out of a broom handle.

That happened to one I did. About five casts in I hung it on something and broke it off. It's part of the game, losing them.

Stainless leader wire. I got a lot of it but it's out of the package so I'm not sure of the size. I'll find out and post it.

This morning I cut out the bill. I made it a bit oversize so I can "tune" the lure. (Make it run straight). I used Lexan.

I put some duct tape on the bench and mix the epoxy on it and get the bill in straight as I can. When your done just pull up the tape and throw it away.

I taped off the bill and got it ready to paint. It's not pinned together yet, I want to be able to paint in between the two parts but I want them lined up as I paint it. That's a Skitterwalk in the back ground, it's slightly bigger than that. The picture is deceiving on the size.

Went and filled my feeder, sat down in my pop up and 5 minutes later a pig walked in. Fastest hunt I've ever had. So I got home early yesterday and decided to get the painting done today. First a base coat of white.

Next I gave it a a coat of pearl, this helps as a base coat for the other pearls I'll be using. It's hard to see the difference in my garage light but it's there.

Next I put down some pearlized silver. I try to build colors from bottom to top, light to dark. It makes a big difference in the end. The silver will be hard to see in the end but it helps transition the colors up the lure.

Next is pearlized gold. Still building from bottom to top. The silver helped mute the gold into the white so it's not a sharp transition.

Next I used pearlized purple. I cut a stencil for the gill plate (I messed this up twice) and used a comb (don't tell my wife) to spray the stripes. I also put some small dots around the gill plate with a small tipped brush.

To add a little detail I used a fine tip brush to put gray dots on top of the purple. I think small details make a big difference.

So now all that's left is the epoxy clear coat. I went for a pin fish look on this one and I'm happy with it so far. The clear coat is easy to mess up so hopefully I don't wreck it now.
