Had ducks finally show up on ponds I watch daily. Not big numbers but usually a sign birds have moved in.

Well, has the first half of the split seen any numbers improve for anyone?
A smooth 80 degrees today sure as heck ain’t helping anything.

I decided to hold off going today, due to weather being "to nice" the last few days, and my youngest grandson's football game today.

But, there is a mild front that is supposed to blow in on Sunday evening in North Texas, leaving some cooler temps for Monday. I might give it a shot Sunday.

My boat and gear are ready. Just need the birds and weather.

Well 3rd hunt on a private lake. My buddy shot a ring neck, so after three hunts the skunk is off us.

Still scratching my head on how we need to set up.

All three hunts we've had ducks come in and circle the spread and then fly off. We are set up how he's always hunted out here, but for some reason they don't like the spread. Which is a simple spread at that. Couple of big ducks, feeder (wobbles), and five GWT.

Next week were setting up in a different spot on the lake and I'm thinking of replacing the GWT with gray ducks. And bring another feeder.

Still nice to have some place to go, and the fact we see birds I'm encourage to try to figure this out.

We are seeing basically all adults due to the poor hatch this year. That means on average you are going to really have to work for full straps. Sure there will be the hunts were they come straight in to die but Iím afraid that wonít be the norm this year.

It may be your blind more than your spread. Be sure you are well concealed and you have dimension to your cover. Fresh cane and brush every hunt has really helped us. We also gave up on fixed blinds during the first split and used portable panel blinds almost exclusively.

For spread, donít be afraid to mix it up. This year is going to be different and if you donít have them working, get out there and change it up. Think about throwing big spreads, spreads with multiple landing areas, giant spreads with room to land all throughout, or movement/no movement. Iím afraid this year things are going to be a bit funky But thatís part of the chase.

Should keep it at 6 straps so there won't be any confusion. Other than that, it looks awesome. Need to make myself one

Great to hear. I believe the trinity unit is the wooded WMA that is open to the public to hunt other animals just not duck or deer so i wasnít sure if anybody has any insight on the property or if it holds birds.

I haven't hunted it for duck but I hunted it for archery deer last year. Going in and out we passed flooded timber that was holding hundreds of wood ducks. I've never seen that large numbers of wood ducks before. There were also a lot of mallards in the timber and small lakes as well.

This is getting me quite excited. It looks like the dates we drew (7th-8th) is the first week they are allowing waterfowl hunting on the trinity unit. Should be a good one.

The last hour before sundown has been the best for me in the past, when I did evening hunts. Especially the last 30 minutes before sundown. Once it's quitting time (sundown), seems like they come pouring in. Wings a whistling like jet motors with mufflers.

I'm going to shoot me some coots this next time and see if they're good or bad. They are plant eaters so there's probably no mud bug taste.

Taste just as good as any duck if you can cook them. Definitely not as bad as a ringneck

I've used them in a gumbo. Blake has a great recipe for them.

I am seeing 1-2 groups a day while out fishing the Aransas Pass area. If I go outside St Joes maybe a few more. I was expecting a lot more ducks in the area. It is my first year in the area and have not grabbed the blocks yet. Not enough for me to even put effort into it yet. Is it usually Christmas before things get going around Rockport

Nope itís been rough down there this season. Should of already been seeing big rafts of birds, no cold weather up north means no reason for the ducks to leave.

He drew the Carl fentress north unit thatís broken into compartments and fields, or the south unit? Not looking like a lot of water for the south unit holes, looks like a lot of flooded timber.

Hunted on my place in young county Weds & Thurs. Did ok. Shot 5 with the 410 on Weds. Could have shot limit with the big gun. Had to let a few go,because they didn't work in close enough. Thurs, got 2. They went into my neighbors pond. I did see more birds on the ponds coming & going. Not like normal, but better than it was.

Getting poor reports from our place near Nada. We're headed out in the morning regardless, but we absolutely need some freezing weather to get some new ducks down here.

Same here for the places we hunt east of houston and from a couple guides.

They actually eat good. And save the gizzards. Fresh pan fried Pouldeau Gizzards and Pouldeau gizzard gumbeaux!

Ended with 5, 3 teal and 2 ringnecks. Hopefully this little front tomorrow brings some birds down.
