Default Gut shot just now

I just shot a giant buck. Waited 30 and went to get the arrow. Smells like guts. Decent blood trail starting at about 5 yards from the shot. How long should I wait?

This especially with the blood. There's a giant artery back there that can kill them quick.

Two hours minimum and thatís if you think the shot is good. What was the angle? Maybe quartering to you and exit is back? Can you get a dog? How much property do you have access to? Really consider a dog that can bay a deer if needed. Safest bet in my opinion.

If you gut shot him and that's all you got it's going to take about 12 hours for him to die. If you got out of there super quiet and didn't alert him he will be stone dead in his first bed tomorrow morning. Don't chance it! He's dead, be patient and he will be there waiting for you. Even if you bumped him on accident he may get up and run to a new bed. This is a super easy track for a dog, gut shot deer are the easiest for a dog to find if you do it right. If you go too early and start chasing him he will go to the next county. Pick up this track tomorrow morning at first light.

If it were me, I would give him 4 hours before carefully and QUIETLY taking up the trail. There's a good chance that if you hit anything vital along with guts he will be dead in 60 yards. I would probably track that far depending on the blood, but back out sooner if it didn't look good. If you aren't concerned about saving the meat, waiting until morning may best.

He's big. I shot him broadside, just a hair quartering away, ground level. 2 steps from the pen there was blood and chewed corn. 10 more feet blood on broom weed. I backed out and left.

Chewed corn very well could have come out of his mouth when he jumped the pen, I would ease down the trail a few yards and watch the blood trail.
