I am not sure it’s illegal unless you are using your employment privileges etc to look it up if it’s not job related.

Op,
Google is your friend in most cases.

You can go to county and pay to get the information. Last time I did it was less than $5 dollars. I had an officer get suspended for 3-days that ran a LP for a friend, and friend ran his mouth to his soon to be ex, and she reported him. He could have been fired and faced criminal charges.

If an officer runs an LP that’s not directly related to work we can lose our privilege to run plates and agency can also get its license pulled. Not to mention getting suspended/fired. As mentioned earlier, try with records at DMV office or google.

Suspicious acting car he encountered, while on the job, so he ran the plates. Who ask any questions, who checks the time and location, to make sure the car was in vicinity of where the officers GPS says he was?
No one.
Cops been running plates for people they know forever, seen it happen dozens of times growing up.
Your problem OP, is you don't have a cop for a friend.

Yeah, and you use to be able to "tune people up" with a blackjack, but times have changed. At least that is what I was told way back in the day.

There is a neighborhood across I10 from Mont Belvieu that records every car's license plate that comes into the neighborhood. There is only one entrance and the theft has gone down to nothing. The HOA controls the tapes but I think the Sheriff Office looks up the plate numbers if there is an issue.

This describes my neighborhood to a T! Someone ran over one of our bushes out by the mailbox and hauled butt. Cops had his info within an hour. It was a company van and his boss was out within 4 hours. Apologized and offered to pay for my damages. Told me he fired his driver for leaving the scene and not reporting it. Never would have been found without that camera.

I think we are going to get one up soon for our neighborhood. We haven't had any issues yet but the area is growing.
