I’m in 10 and like everybody said it’s thick. They just bush hogged most of the roads in the compartment and I got a feeling I’ll be braking out the compressor before this one done.
Had 1 buck come out at last light. He was a nice heavy 10 but quite the one. Other than that 1 bobcat.

We are up and ready to go this morning. After watching him for over 30 minutes last night, Iím almost positive that wide deer was young, maybe only 3.5 years. Body, mass, tine height all said young. Just couldnít believe his width. And what I believe was probably a 4.5 year old 8 pointer made him scoot just by looking at him. That deer will be an absolute stud in a couple of years.

Same game plan this morning. Will re-evaluate after that. Current temp 37 degs and no wind!!!

Maybe it's the picture but that deer looks fully mature to me. But I hate aging deer off of pictures cause camera angles can do weird things. Good luck!

In the pic he looks like a blob for some reason. He was skinny, smaller shoulders. Iím confident he was young.

On a plus, I may have may shooter at about 450 yards. A good 8 is out beside him and heís definitely bigger and wider. Heís working away from me but hopefully heíll turn around and head this way:

Beautiful morning. Both bucks moved on. Bigger one was interested in a doe but donít think here feelings were mutual. Just have to be patient. 2 deer came in to the check station last night. 1 mgmt and a 118 inch buck.

Iím a long time east Texas hunter (Trinity Co) and sure love the change of scenery. Not a pine tree or crow to be seen.

Loving keeping up with this thread. I cant imagine shooting a 118" deer out there on the first day, but to each his own I guess.

Wonder who shot what. I’ll try asking the staff later. Guy south of me said he had 33 years, or pts, before being drawn here. Don’t know when the point system started. Felt bad for him if that’s the truth. I drew management at 6pts and this hunt at 8pts.

Now if I could just see a buck walking while here. Still better than a day at work, so no complaints.

Edit: I say the above as I heard the guy below me shoot last night.

I think Brokeno that commented on this thread has that same amount of points or close to it (33). Congrats on drawing this hunt with 8! I will hit double digits next year. Im just praying I get drawn soon so my dad can experience the Chap.

Yeah Iím not gonna comment because I could ďsettleĒ later in the week. But knowing what is out here made passing those 2 ďshootersĒ last night much easier.

All 4 in our our group saw legal 8 pointers last night. Probably 3.5 and 4.5 year old deer, somewhere between 14-15 inches wide. Maybe 120 inches. Something I probably wouldnít have passed on my E Texas lease but got a pass here especially on the first night.

The deer I saw this morning was bigger bodied, wider by a couple inches and taller than the 8 I described above.

Well my wide deer just showed back up. Wish I had a decent camera. He is just confusing the crap out of me.

I feel like if you’ve got enough thought to Sit and type about him, he’s not the deer you really wanna kill. It should be a deer that the first thing you grab is your rifle and lastly your phone. It already sounds like you’re not happy with him on the hoof, so do you wanna use your trophy on a deer you’re not happy with from the start?

I killed a 20 inch wide 10 point last year at the Chap. I was happy with it but definitely not a monster. I killed it on Tuesday of the hunt and saw big old bucks afterwards.

If hes the biggest deer you ever shot then drop him. I hunted the jay pasture back in 2002. All the deer taken were about the size your describing. There was only one true trophy taken that week.

Broadside shot at roughly 175 yds. He tipped over backwards, kicked up a bunch of dirt, tried to get up a couple times and finally righted himself and stumbled off with a front leg hanging. Hopefully heís laying just off the road. Being a bow hunter my instincts are just telling me to sit for awhile. If heís down, he ainít going anywhere.

Sort of bummed he ainít laying dead in the road. Because of the long sendero here, I am Shooting gun I feel comfortable reaching out a ways. REM 7mm-08 with a flat shooting load. Hopefully will have LDPs shortly.

I'll second what bigred said above, out there if you have to talk yourself into shooting a deer he isn't the one. Especially on the gun hunt in december out there. The buck of a lifetime could walk out any minute especially with the cool weather. Out there you know its the right deer when the first thought through your head is "holy***X...."

There are bigger down here but NOT disappointed I pulled the trigger. Has 11 storable points and donít have a tape on me but Iíll be interested to see what his width is. Donít see many wide deer in E TX where I hunt. He only made it 20 yards before piling up.
