Helluva deer! Congrats to him!

In for the finishing off story or if he found him dead! I bet that was a helluva standoff either way..

He returned 30-40 minutes later no sign of the deer. Backed out and came back around 1pm. Sat there until 3:45 or so and decided to go look at the spot where he last saw him. Got over there and nothing. Was walking back to his chair and peeked over in a small Willow thicket and there he layed already expired. He had been sitting near it the entire time.

Was he able to salvage the meat or did it spoil?

When I left he went to clean it. I believe it was salvageable.

Well checked cams and threw out a little hand corn for tomorrow evening-Sunday hunt. Little discouraging not seeing one trail cam pic of my target for the last 8 days. I did see him with my own eyes for sure Sunday but not 100% positive on Mondays sighting if it was him or not.

His running buddy tall 10pt has decided to feed at night and is alone in all the pics. Only day time activity is doe and 1-2 yr old bucks. Did have 2 new doe show up with fawns so that's a plus!

I'll be in the stand tomorrow evening most likely at my front location for a legal cull with my longbow. Probably set up 2 new stand locations mid day Saturday for the rest of the wknds hunts.

This ugly 7pt is starting to show up a little more. Very close to legal. Have to see him in person to decide if I want my son to shoot him or not. Also this young one sided guy may go with trad gear if given the opportunity!

Looks like that 7 point is legal. It's a coin toss on the one sided one if he'll make anything. If I was looking to fill the freezer, I'd take him.

I have 7 young spike/3pt running around. I normally let them go. One spike I know is a 2.5 yr old and really want to take him out. One sided may get an arrow if I have my Trad gear in hand and a freezer to fill!

2 year old spike, or unbranched on one side gets taken out every time I get a chance. Many on here would beat me up though!

Believe he is 6.5 this year. I've been watching him for some time and have TC pics back 3 yrs. He is a dandy for sure and one smart joker! Could have killed him 3 times last gun season. He put on some mass this year and was looking really good until he broke his split G2. Still a fine looking deer to me!

Everyone's definition of trophy is different. I was after a buck last year with a spike on one side and 4 points on the other. I got him and I'm more pleased with him than I am the buck I have that I got a Texas big game award with.

I want to hear some score guesses on him. Not that it really matters.

Here are my numbers.

Mass 31
Spread 15
MB 21-21
G1 5-5
G2 9
G3 9-9

125

He does have about 2" or so of right side G2 where it broke. Basically a 7pt

Default Thanks so much to Jason!

So, I had the most emotional roller coaster trying to get that deer! Jason was with me on the journey since the summer pics. I couldn't believe the deer was alive at 10am Wednesday morning, 15 hours after the shot. When we cleaned the deer, I actually hit him right where I wanted. He was quartered to me, so I settled the pin on the point of the shoulder. Shot hit right where I wanted, deflected down from the shoulder blade, took out that lung, but then exited out the bottom of the deer where a belly button would be.

I know I've read so many stories about tough deer but they really are. Sometimes it is just bowhunting. He did have gut injury, and he did go to the water. I think Jason's dog was on him, and I think we did jump him. He must've not been feeling good to hang right by that water. I definitely give the glory to God and thanked him for not only the deer and recovery but for the whole process and lessons learned along the way. I shot 3 deer with my Mathews last year and watched 1 fall at 20 yards and the other 2 within 50 yards. All I can say is shots can go as planned and still not finish deer like we think.

This is my biggest deer to date and he scored 135 3/8s as a clean 8. Thanks for the follows and encouragement. I couldn't be happier and am glad Jason and I got to share the experience! He takes some great photos too!

Man have you ever thought about dumping a chit load of corn and see if he’d show up? I know every time I’ve ever done that they gorge themselves and would come around regular.
Just a thought or experiment.

I normally pour 30-50# every Wednesday. The Wednesday before opening day I poured 100#. He has not been in the feed pen since then. I will say the corn I poured looked old. There is a new bag in the pen yesterday so we will see if he shows up this wknd.

He is a bully buck so I'm really surprised he hasn't been in there even at night. Could easily be dead already from going over to the neighbors.

I feel the same. Everyone says to kill the does for management, but we don't have that many deer to manage! Doesn't make sense to kill the producers!

Back in the main set-up for the big guy. I may make a move mid day depending on how the morning goes. Tight spot so phone use will be limited. Will update after 1st hour of light.
