Default 3/4 or 1 ton diesel truck help needed

I know the TBH Braintrust will help me out on this one. Looking to buy a NEW 3/4 or 1 ton diesel truck long or short bed to pull a 30' fifth wheel travel trailer.
Currently looking at the big three diesels, with auto trans.
Dodge-Cummings
Chevy-Duramax
Ford-Powerstroke
Also what would be better, long bed or short bed for a fifth wheel hauler.

Let me hear the good and the bad

Everyone has their own opinions and mine is Duramax for sure. Been there done that with Dodge and between mine and friends new Fords I've driven I still say Duramax.

Dually would be ideal but if not go with the longbed.

Hey. I run a f350 short bed ex cab I like it better just because it gets around easy in tight places. The long bed works better just because of the room from the rear window of the truck and the trailer.As far as the truck goes they all will pull it .

LONG BED all the way. It is the only way to go for a 5th wheel. As far as what truck just stay away from 07-09 or so Dodge, any 6.0 or 6.4 ford (03 to 09 or so) and on the duramax I am not sure they ever had a bad year. Only other thing I can tell ya is don't listen to 99% of the crap folks will say when bashing one brand or the other, they are biased on the brand they have or want to have or their girlfriend has. Sure there are a few you should stay away from so try and find out who knows and who doesn't (don't believe all the my bud is a ford tech and they make a good living or my bud is a dodge tech and has no time to hunt due to overtime bla bla. Of all the new trucks on the market I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

They all pull! I've pulled trailers with the new 6.7 Cummins and the most recent Duramax. They both pulled pretty great, I can't say anything ill about either one but I would venture to say the Duramax pulled better (Both trucks were chipped, not sure what the difference in HP was). On that note my dad has a 6.7 PSD that he hauls heavy loads with tons of wind drag in and he says it never misses a beat. All of these trucks are 3/4 tons by the way.

From someone that owns and pulls a 33' fifth wheel, get a long bed, either a C/C or whatever you want. You can pull with a short bed, but you will have to go with a slider hitch. Personally, I would go with the 6.7 Ford over any of the others. Definitleybstay away from the 6.0 or 6.4 Fords.

On another note, I have spent close to 10 grand for repairs to my 2006 6.0, all out of warranty. That is a good reason to stay away.

I guess I will be in the minority because I recommend a short bed. I have pulled several 5th wheels with mine and have had zero issues. For one I can't stand the look of the long bed, plus it is harder to maneuver when not towing. I also recommend Duramax for no other reason than it is what I drive and don't have any issues.

My personal opinion would be to go with Dodge because i have only owned Dodge diesels.We do have Fords at work and they are constantly having issues.There is a Ford dually sitting in my engine bay right now with 5100 miles on it and its been in the shop quite few times.We recently purchased a Ford 450 for a Brush truck and it wont get out of its own way and its only got a 2000lb sked on it and it gets 7 mpg. Killeen and Coryell county Ambulances swithed from Fords to Dodges and havent looked back.The trucks we have on the ranch have been hooked up to some very heavy loads and these trucks are work horses.My FIL owns a Dodge, the ranch hand owns a Dodge ,and so do I. Because they Work.Go to any rodeo and check out whats in the Parking lot and what the cowboys are hauling with. A Majority(not all) will be Dodge. Dont have alot of Faith in Ford cause they have swtiched Motors about a 100 times in the past 13 yrs.Dodge and Chevy have stuck with what works.I like the duramax alot and the Allison Tranny is a Beast as well .....but they are Pricey and to rich for my blood.As far as the right truck, that depends on you.If your gonna be pulling this travel trailer all the time then get a Dually, you will be Happier.If this a once or twice a yr deal then get a Long bed single axle 1 ton ,no sense in buying 6 tires when 4 will do.The extra leaf spring in the rear suspension will come in Handy.I have pulled over 30,000lbs with my Dodge in a 3/4ton and it was fine but thats a rare occasion,If i was doing that more often then i would either get a 1ton Dually or Single axle 1 ton.

Long bed for sure. I have a f350 single wheel long bed and love it. 6.7 psd. But any of the 3 will pull fine but I highly recommend long bed. Can u pull one with short, yes but but long will always be better.

2000 3/4 ton 7.3 powerstroke short bed crew cab
pulls great maneuvers great in tight spaces. just don't turn super sharp when backing, possible to jackknife camper against back of cab. I put the king pin adapter on mine and connect to my gooseneck ball.
24.5 gooseneck camper

measure from the center of the king pin on trailer to the side of camper, then measure from gooseneck ball or fifthwheel plate to back window. you will know if its going to hit or not.

I've had all 3 brands,and they were all good for dragging stuff.I never pulled a camper/fifth wheel,but a good friend of mine sold his Duramax/shortbed,and bought a long bed.

My uncle had an '11 Chevy 2500 Dmax. Had a transmission hose blow out on him at 10k miles and left him stranded on the side of the road in a puddle of tranny fluid. Under warranty of course but he said it never ran the same afterwards. Traded it in yesterday for a '14 Ford f250 platinum. That thing is night and day from the Chevy. IMHO.

Lol. None of the diesel trucks on the market today are "junk". Your truck will only last as long as you let it. Meaning you have to take care of them. If you beat the hell out of a truck of course it's going to give out on your quicker.

I run a landscaping company. We have 5 1 ton dodges, 4 1 ton fords and 2 one ton Chevys. All of them have made is over 200k hard miles. Towing heavy 5 days a week 52 weeks a year. All have had minimal problems with just general maintenance. IMHO you really can't go wrong with any of the big three. Me personally, I'm a dodge man and always have been. My advice is to go test drive all three and pick the one that fits you best.

6.4 F250...no issues..keeping mind...will you pull 1 or 2 weeks a year, or 80% of the time..on the few times a year..short bed..fords are 6'-9"beds..i know, i own one...if you do *0% or so, the long bed will keep you from needing a slider hitch...I know folks that chase insurance with short 6.0 fords and 5th wheels...300k miles...they left the un-chipped..and had no issues....

My vote is for the Dmax. I love mine. I have had 2 and my GF has one and we haven't had any problems with em. The engine and tranny combo on them is the best on the market.

My 5th wheel is only ~32 footer, but my short bed 6.7 Ford pulls it just fine without a slider. I use a B&W hitch set towards the rear (still over the axle) and can turn pretty darn sharp.
Here it is towing my stuff home from the lease last week.

It does just fine as long as I keep 6th locked out for all but flatland ( not an issue when single towing)
Pulls like a dream in 5th, 2100 rpm's at 73ish mph with plenty of boost on tap if needed.
It Got 8.6- 8.9mpg double pulling this trip.

I have to watch my speed going up long hills because it would creep to 80mph real easy. Thank goodness my copilot was keeping a better eye on the GPS speed than I was (don't want to be changing flat trailer tires).

One thing that sucks for the Ford short bed is the smallish ~26 gallon fuel tank they put in them. Besides that I wouldn't change a thing.
If you go with a newer F250, budget ahead for airbags- otherwise you'll be looking at the sky when you tow.
I like having them, I can adjust psi going down the road to match the ride I want or level the truck if need be.

A short box F350 would be my first choice if $$ is less of a concern. The 350's don't cost that much more, but finding a good deal on one sitting on the lot is another story- they usually don't order too many short box 350's so have less (or none) on hand to deal on.

It is ridiculous to spend the money on any diesel and then have to pay extra, to bullet proof it. My certified Ford mechanic said it was a waste of money and really does not bullet proof one as some say. This is not a mechanic at Ford but one that was and now has a very good shop of his own. this is just his opinion.

I agree 100% with you. Why should you pay 15-20K for a truck then have to dump 10K into it just so it will work as it should have from the factory.

Having owned Ford and Dodge Diesels, I would go with the Dodge, the Cummins is pretty much known as the best engine on the market, and the only one that follows the inline 6 cylinder layout that is the norm in big rig engines. Dodge transmissions have been plagued in the past with problems, but from all accounts, the newer transmissions are MUCH better than the old ones. NONE of these trucks are bullet proof, you have to maintain them all and treat them right, so look at recommended maintenance schedules and figure out which one is going to cost the most to maintain. If you maintain it as recommended, it will hold up fine, regardless which one you pick.

On the issue of bed length, i say long, for multiple reasons. Number one, when you're not pulling, you can just flat hall more in a long bed than a short bed. Secondly, when you are pulling, the long bed will allow you to take advantage of the tighter turning radius (both forward and reverse) that the 5th wheel/goose neck allows over a bumper pull. Short bed, you run a significant risk of getting the cab and trailer together, and that's not pretty. Some mentioned the ease of maneuvering when not towing, and while a short bed will always be easier to park than a long bed, brand makes a difference to. Fords have a horrible turning radius, when I drove a Ford, and even now when I'm driving the fords at work, i joke about parking my Peterbuilt. When I bought my Dodge, it was like a whole other world. The Ford short beds are better than the long beds, but my experience has been that a long bed Dodge is still better than a short bed Ford on turning radius.

I own a concrete construction company and run dodges . I trashed 2 6.0 fords and when the ford "tech" told me it was smoking because the cranking amps were to low on the batteries that ended it for ford . Ive put over 200k miles on my last 3 dodges with out and problems . And this is hauling dozers hay etc at least 4 days a week . Not to mention dodges are cheaper .

A buddy of mine got rid of a swb 6.4 ford in favor of a lwb 6.7 for towing the fifth wheel. With a swb and a tool box, there is very little room for anything else in the bed with the trailer hooked up.

I personally prefer a swb, but I don't own a fifth wheel. If I did, I would get a lwb
