I have a mountain rifle in 280 caliber. I put a McMillan fiberglass stock on it. I shoot Nosler 150 gr partition w 54 gr of 4350. It is my all time favorite rifle.
I am going to NW Territories this fall for Moose & Caribou. It will be a bowhunt but thinking of taking this rifle as insurance in case I can't get it done w stick & string.

My neighbor bought a mountain rifle, about 20 years ago in 7mm-08. I worked up some loads for him and it shoots lights out.

I would think a light rifle in .280 would bark a bit. I have a Browning A Bolt and it gets meat on both ends. Shooting it out of the stand is no big deal, but not fond of range days with it. I ended up getting a lead sled to shoot at the range cause it was tearing my shoulder up.

Yeah I actually won the auction for this beauty in 280 Rem today. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.

The first "deer" rifle I ever bought for myself was an original Mountain Rifle in .270 from the early '90's. Had a Leupold lightweight compact 3-9x scope on it. Very light, handled great, but had pretty stout recoil. I foolishly traded it off, should have rebarreled it to .257 Roberts or 7mm Mauser. I think the short actions were available in all the .308-based cartridges, as well as .257R and 7mm Mauser.
