    What caliber to build

I just acquired a 30-06 savage i plan to build a do all rifle on I have plenty of calibers to choose from already. I want something that I can kill just about anything with and plan on going all out on this build.

I’m currently leaning towards a 280ai 22-24” barrel and shooting 150-168 class projectiles.

I do a small amount of rifle hunting for white tail, hogs and have been going elk hunting the last few years but never know what the future holds. I hand load so ammo is no issue.

What do y’all think? Ps I like wildcats.

I’m no expert, but sounds like the rifle and caliber you have is the perfect do it all rifle.

I know a 30-06 is a great do all but I just like off the wall stuff.

How about the classic 300 H&H. Probably not an option for your platform.

First thought was 6.5-284 or .280ai on that action and bolt face.

The caliber you are describing, sounds like a 30-06, that you want. It used to be the do all caliber, but now it is too old. People don't like things that are old and they don't want a do everything, anything. Got to have a different thing for each thing they do, except for their phones, that still the do all, thing. Probably find an answer more to your liking at Starbucks.

If you want a long action, chambering that has a .473 case head, that will work great on elk and also whitetail, I would say 30-06. Will also work great for moose or grizzlies. Get some 200 gr. Partitions and it will work very well for those big tough guys.

              24” 280ai sounds perfect.

I’ve considered that I also have 2 260s in the safe.

That 280 Ackley sounds about perfect IMO.

I was in the same boat about a year ago. Ended up going with the tired and true 30-06 and I dont have a single regret
