    223 round for deer

Ok , got my very inexperienced nephew (12yo) coming to hunt @ Christmas
I think my old handi rifle 223 is the gun for him

    Barns vortex 55gr ?
    Or
    Winchester xp 64gr ?

In the ribs / shoulder , 75 yards to feeders

Or should I just hand him the 308 after practice with the 22mag ?

I would go with the 308

      Either will work just fine.

We have had great luck with Federal Fusion on deer. No experience on the 2 rounds you suggested.

My daughter shot one @ 130 yards with the Hornady American whitetail load. It killed him. Right behind the shoulder

Buy him some light loads for the 308. But if he only practices with the 22mag he will probably be fine as he wont be scared of the recoil

Shot several hogs with that barnes bullet. Punched right they them and they ran a long ways. Not enough velocity.

I'd ask Hully, as he just downed a Bull Elk w/his .223 !

Neck shot either will do the job.

I'd suggest practicing with the .308 and then having him hunt with it. Let him feel the recoil. If for some reason he absolutely can't handle it, do some practicing with the .223. Yes, the .223 will kill deer, but the .308 is more suitable for the job.

I made a perfect shot with the Speer 75gr .223. After opening him up, the bullet took out the top part of the heart, but he still ran about 80 yards and left zero blood trail. I am not sure if I would attempt a shoulder shot with that small of a round again. Especially with an inexperienced shooter. Yes, it will work, but if a less than ideal shot is made (and the probability of this is much higher with an inexperienced shooter at live game), you run the risk of losing the animal.

As mentioned above, .308 is what I would suggest.

Hunted/killed with Remington Core-lokt PSP 55gr many times, both deer and pigs. All about the shot placement.
