Default New Mexico Muley Down

Iíll keep this one short, I drew a pretty solid deer tag for late archery season in New Mexico. After scouting for two days and seeing some great deer during the hunt, I was able to get an arrow in the important places of a really nice buck. There was crunchy snow everywhere and stalking was a nightmare, but I canít wait to do it again if Iím lucky enough to get a tag. Hunted for 9 days, two days of scouting, slept in a tent in single digit weather the whole time and enjoyed myself thoroughly. Met some very solid people along the way.

The buck i killed was not the biggest I saw or even in the top 5, but he was a mature buck in a killable situation. Iím very happy with him and with the experience. Hunting alone, I apologize for the field pictures. The ones in the driveway show him much better. Iíd guess his body to weigh 265 or so on the hoof

(Iím not going to mention unit numbers)

Congrats that’s really cool, have you been to NM before? Just curious how you knew where to hunt and camp. We are wanting to do this.

Iíve been to New Mexico a few times, mostly hunting antelope and helping with a couple elk tags. My gf had a rifle tag earlier in the year in NM, I figured this place out by combing through the regs and talking to a couple friends from NM.

As far as where to hunt. I drove and glassed, hiked and glassed, climbed and glassed, glassed from camp. All kinds of glassing

Congratulations. Just returned myself after 6 days of hunting in central NM but got tag soup. Looks like you were further north if you had snow to contend with.

I wore good merino wool base layers, heavy socks, Sitka pants, heavy weight Sitka top with a Sitka puffy jacket. Outdoor research gaiters, Kenetrek boots, and beanie.

My camp was a seek outside redcliff, with a cabelas outfitter cot and -25* bag. I used a seek outside SXL stove in the tent.

The temps were cold but the stove helped a ton and the bag could handle it.

I was walking back to the truck after a blown stalk where some jack wagon drove his ranger after a really nice buck in the sage. Blew him out of the country, I stood up and yelled a few choice words at the guy and got ďits public landĒ yelled back. I was within 150 yard of him and had been crawling for about 45 min.

On the walk back to the truck to continue glassing I spotted 7 does and 3 smaller bucks coming out on the flat about 400 yards away. The buck I ended up shooting was bringing up the rear of the group. Back to crawling and playing the wind for another hour, the shot was right before dark. I watched him fall through my range finder about 150 yards from where he was standing at the shot. Darkness came on quick and I decided to give it till the morning to go find him.

I got back to camp, cooked dinner, laid down, and stared at the roof of the tent for 10 min. Enough of that, I got my gear back on and grabbed the headlamp and flashlight to go find him. Found blood about 30 yards from where I shot him and trailed him the rest of the way. He was quartering away, I hit him about 3 ribs back and caught liver onside, lung and the bottom of his heart as the arrow exited.

Really enjoyed the solo aspect of this hunt. Sure it would have been nice to have someone to flag me in on a stalk, but getting it done solo was very rewarding.
