Anyone know if they assign each Hunter/Group to a Unit at orientation, or if all units are open to everyone?

My advice is get there 1 hr before orientation, its a first in-first out once the meeting is over and you'll have 200 other hunters racing to get to there spots to claim the area.

Got drawn for the 04-08 December archery hunt. It'll be my first time to Laguna. Super pumped would be an understatement.

Looking for a hunting partner or small group that's willing to put in the miles on their boots. I'm in good shape and expecting to go as deep as possible, unless someone who has more experience wants to go with me and has other ideas.

I'll be headed down from the Killeen/Fort Hood area.

If you consider going too far in just keep in mind that if you kill something it will be difficult to take out considering your by yourself.

Other than that its a good idea- good luck.

Have any of you had to do the orientation the next day (Friday)? Due to work obligations it looks like my son-in-law will not be able to make it to the orientation on Thursday.

One of the guys I met out there had to do it the morning of the first hunt before being let out in the field two years ago. Shouldnít be a problem but may want to give the park official a heads up.

Thanks. This will be his first time out there with me. Let's hope he at least slings some arrows.

I will call the office on Monday and confirm.

Iíve got a question, if it was only my name on the application does that mean Iím the only one allowed to hunt via that permit or can I bring 3 others? Never been drawn before so this is all new.

I’ve been looking forward to this season’s Laguna hunt since last one ended. Sucks I didn’t get picked this time. Will just have to live it by reading FyGuyy’s stories.

Questions for the hunters with some experience on the LANWR, what types of areas are most productive? Edges of open mud flats, water (if it’s dry), pinch points, tree lines, breaks in dense brush? I have a 6ft tripod, a pop-up, blind a pair of legs at my disposal. I’ve digitally scouted what I think would be best but where I hunt is East Texas is very different. I’ll be down there this weekend to do some scouting and will report back with what I discover.

Evening All. First time poster here.

Got drawn for the first archery hunt 11/6-11/10. Can’t wait. First time to the LA. Trying to scout and plan this thing out on short notice. Thinking I’m going to approach it like a hunt out west, backpacking in and hunting on the ground. Headed to CO in ‘21 so will use this as a flat land training run.

Reading back thru the old threads to learn as much as possible. Will be flying solo. If anyone is up for talking about scouting plans, lodging, celebratory beers, etc. I’m in. Happy to help out any of you good fellas if I’m able. Hope to meet some of y’all there.

Steve in Dripping Springs.

Well, Iím trying to get my ducks in a row for this hunt. I love the Sherpa cart and bike attachment. Probably going to snag that up for my mountain bike along with a bow mount for the handlebars.

Any recommendations on on the bow mount?

Also looking at picking up a Millennium T-100. My current ďportableĒ tripod is too tall and about 100lbs.

Will I be able to mount this and carry it on the Sherpa cart? Concerned about length. If thereís better stand options. Iím certainly open to suggestions.

Also, I definitely need to get tubeless tires for the bike. Going to get in touch with my local bike shop and see what they can fix me up with.

Pumped about the trip. Still got to nail down some lodging, but Iím looking forward to hunting new country.

I bought a Millennium specifically for this hunt but found out that I rarely used it. The lack of tall trees/brush and the immobility is why I decided to go against it. In the end I ended up using a foldable chair.

For my bow I just strapped it my day pack.

For bike tires, I used slime tubes and a compact CO2 pump.

Anybody who has hunted there in the past what was your method of coverage I will be rifle hunting in January and not sure to s&s, tripod or pop up blind or just sit with a folding chair and have versatility to move to different spots if desired, I will be using a bike to get around with a cart. Thinking of going out this weekend to scout and maybe meet some members on here. Now as I drawn for general deer I also have the option to hunt exotic and hogs I know the area has nilgai but what about hogs? Don’t know which caliber to use I’m between .243, 270, 30-06, 6.5x55 or 7 mag as well as 30-30 for nilgai what range will my shots be close to? I’ve shot them in the past from my blind around 100yds or so but not sure if I will be given an opportunity for further shots

Iíve got the Sherpa cart and bike mount on the way.

Millennium T-100 on the way.

Iím also booked at the Los Fresnos Inn 11/19-11/24. If anyone is staying in the area during that hunt weekend, Iíd love to meet some fellow TBHírs and share a beer and a meal.

Saw plenty of hogs when I was there last year. Could probably have shot a couple but they were not the target and looked a bit large.

My wife and I went last year and were successful enough to shoot two cows and seen a few hogs and deer but no bucks. I canít remember the unit we hunted but it was off 106. We walked in about 2.75 miles and found a good spot to sit for the morning. We sat for about 20 minutes after I decided to get up and look around some trees and saw a lonely cow nilgai feeding. I ranged her and got set up and took the shot and connected at 283 yards. She ran 15 yards and folded up. Then the real work began from there. We finally finished up with her when we sat down to take a break and I look up across the open and see three more nilgai cows headed our way. I looked over at my wife and said ďok itís your turnĒ. Well she knew she wouldnít be able to make a long shot so she said for me to take the shot. I quickly ranged some brush I knew theyíd walk by and got dialed in. First big cow came by that brush and I whistled to stop her when she did I squeezed off and connected again at 583 yards this time she took 3 steps and crumbled. I couldíve easily taken the other two but I knew we had our hands full already with the two cows we had on the ground. Definitely a really fun and exciting hunt for sure. Good luck to those of you that have been chosen this year hope to see some good pics.

Thank you sir! It wasnít too bad they were coming across a completely open bare field so it was kinda easy to spot them.

Wife and I got drawn for the 1st rifle hunt Dec 11-13th. My dad and I used to bowhunt the refuge when we lived down there 15 years ago ( back then it was first come first serve 500 permits if memory serves me right ). We have putting in for the draw with a rifle ever since. We are pretty pumped. Good luck and stay safe to everyone that drew!

It's been raining all day down here (Port Isabel). At least a few inches. Good luck with scouting.

HaHa! Iím happy to oblige!

Been out elk hunting since the 9th and Just got back to civilization and getting caught up on this thread in a hotel. (That elk hunt may make for an even better story, if I can find the time I may type it up...).

Well I got drawn for a rifle hunt in January as well. Gonna be down there twice this year. Will be staying at Port Isla Inn again.
