Friday afternoon, enjoying a glass of IPA brewed here in Sheridan. The sunset colors got so vivid I tried to capture in s picture.

Big Sky country. Like the Lord took out His paint brush and got to work.

Pronghorns at our fence. Almost 500 yards away and step around the pickup for a picture- and they’re all alert and watching.

My Christmas present to my wife came today. Santa had to tow a trailer behind the reindeer. I’ll put water and 110v inside it. Locally built, a husband and wife company. They have a sawmill to cut all the fir.

Jose Montana- that would have been funny. I read that the mayor of SJ is trying to get the council to pass a law requiring all firearms owners pay an annual fee and carry mandatory “liability insurance” to be run by the city and the money ‘redistributed’ to ‘worthy’ causes.

The inmates are running the asylum.

I had thought about doing that. The fellows who delivered it had a trailer that has hydraulics to angle and slide the deck out. He said it weighed north of 5,000 pounds. If the wind can lift that, I have bigger problems.

If I staked with 4, 2’ t posts in tge corners and screwed them horizontally into the bottom, I think any force strong enough would splinter the wood.

What are the dimensions on the greenhouse? Looks small in that long distant shot.

It’s 9x18 feet. They max out at 20’ long. Much more than 9’ wide makes the planter beds too deep, so the center aisle just gets wider.

It’s been cold here, dropped to -17 yesterday morning. Up to a balmy 2 now. Sittin’ at home with my wife in front of the fireplace.

The pronghorn herd has been sleeping in a draw below the house, and they came up eating nasty weeds this morning.

I got my whitetail deer-crusher and a 2” leveling kit I brought from Cali mounted on the Dodge, there’s a post in the DIY section on the project. It’s legal in Montana to wire driving lights into the high beams so they turn on/off together.

It’s only cold if you have to go outside.

Except to the wood rack next to the front door. Central forced hot air (propane tank) is our ‘backup’ to burning wood.

Warm sunny weather, went for a walk with the dog on the cross valley irrigation ditch/canal. Named the Vigilante ditch after the miners who organized and tried/ hung 22 bad guys 1863-64. Two were hung a mile below us.

I figured out the 2 1860s stagecoach roads from the Missouri River up north to the gold mining ran right next to our property. The history here is wild.

There’s a storm brewin’ over the Tobacco Roots.

We were in Bozeman today and took a drive past where we rented.

….. yes, the elk herd is still there. Driving past we saw 100+ elk. Many more were bedded in the pine trees on the left. That’s the northern edge of the Gallatin mountains behind.

…. no, the land owner does not allow any hunting on the property. The elk know it, too.

I’ve gotten into the local history and one thing I’m good at using old Government Land Office 1870 survey maps (available online), maps and OnX Hunt is understanding where the old trails were.

On the 160 acres of county land bext to us, this double track used for ranching was the stage coach road from Helena and the Missouri River in northern Montana to the Alder Gulch gold mining.

I found sections of the current dirt road that still have next to it the ruts from stagecoaches and buckboards in the ground!

Hey Bill
Very happy for y’all. Have a question for ya. Are y’all having a radon system installed? I thought it was hogwash until we lived in the Rockies and had one in the home we bought. When we sold it it was inspected as well. They came in and set up their test. Can’t remember how long they tested it for. Apparently granite gives off radon?
We had a great home on 35 acres in the Wet Mountains. Milieus, lion, bear, bobcat, fox, badger, turkey, bull snakes and rattlers. All there. If y’all get a chance check out 660 Locke Mountain Court on Zillow. Now we’re stuck back down here in Katy. Best of luck to y’all brother and I’m along for the ride like everyone else!

Yes to radon ventilation.

We buried perf pipe around the perimeter of the crawlspace, put down a couple inches of sand on top of the fractured rock we built on top of, then covered with thick plastic taped at the seams. It has a vent fan in the crawlspace that runs 24/7.

We buried perf pipe under the garage perimeter before pouring concrete. We have a bonus room above the garage. It has a vent fan in my shop.

The rocks here (lots of granite and gneiss) have naturally occurring uranium, which decays to radon gas.

We had a forecast for a winter storm, turned out to be a nice day. The plan is to hit spring bear hard in May, but I took the Honda for a ride glassing some big canyons that are supposed to have black bear.

Hard to believe I was 3.5 miles line of sight from our house when I took these pictures.

Looking west towards the Tobacco Roots.

Looking east towards the Ruby valley our house is in. Sure felt good to pull the Kuiu hunting clothes and pack out of the closet.

Our archery club is hosting the Montana Selfbow Jamboree June 23-26. Make your own self bow, shoot our (great) 3d range, dry RV camping in the fields next to the range. PM me if interested.

3 trips to the hardware store plumbing aisle later, I have the drip irrigation control installed. I need to get the 1/2” drip line installed next.

I moved 3+ tons of crushed rock and good planting mix by bucket from a dump trailer into the planting beds.

110vac next month for lights and a heater. I went with a battery timer to not run 110 to that end of greenhouse.

Like that clear filter assembly! I have a similar system for my drip system, but clear sure would help me keep up with changing/cleaning the cartridge! One drawback to livin' "out in the sticks" is a trip to the hardware store is an all-day affair! I try to keep a mini-Lowe's/Home Depot in my barn!! ESPECIALLY PVC fittings!!

Sorry Bill. Just found your post regarding Locke Mountain Court. Locke Mountain Court is a road inside of Locke Mountain Estates. The ranch is around 3-4 miles from the Town of Florence. You can see the Colorado Super Max down in the valley from our former front door. It’s about 10 miles from Canyon City. And yes that was an Observatory. The owner took his telescope with him.
