New Mexico Private Landowner Elk Hunt

Looking at booking a 2022 archery elk hunt in NM. I’m an experienced bowhunter, but have never done any western hunting so I’m looking for a guided hunt with landowner tag. I’m in good physical shape and can handle the walking and hiking. I don’t mind staying in a tent camp, but I’m not opposed to staying in a nice place either. I’ve found a lot of different outfitters but really would rather book something based on solid references. I know this has probably been asked several times but search function is not working for me. And maybe some fresh eyes will see this post. Thanks!

New Mexico will be difficult for elk as a non-resident.

The odds of being drawn are low.

You can do the lottery through an outfitter with 10% better odds.

You can pay $$$$ to an outfitter that has guaranteed tags.

I did a rifle hunt in NM in October with a landowner tag. No draw. Just gotta find one and then write a check. I didn't kill an elk.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding….I know draw is nearly impossible as a NR…

I thought NM landowner tag/guide fee would range 10-15k?

You are probably right on the price range.

If it were me, for that kind of change, I think you can have a better experience in Colorado or even Idaho.

We are looking at NW Idaho for fall 22 elk right now.

If you want a big bull and have the cash I’d go to NM. If not I’d look to one of the Dakota’s, Wyoming or Idaho. I think even Utah has some decent NR bull tags in less popular units.

What size of elk are you looking to chase. In New Mexico that’s the difference between a good hunt for $8k with a small chance at a 300” bull or 15-20k with a good chance at a 350+

I’m not insisting I shoot a certain size to an outfitter. Just want a good quality guide with a highly likely opportunity at a harvest. I’m okay with 15k

I used Wild out Pro out of Farmington NM. They were a great outfit. We were second rifle and both of us got bulls. Derek Martin is his name. Great service and it was WAY less than that12-15k price.

Look up Michael Delao with Gila and Apache Outfitters. He might be able to get you a land owner voucher and his guides know where the big ones are and how to get you on them. Tag range from 7k to 12k and his fully guided hunts are around 6.5k
