48 degrees in Menard at 1:00 PM today. Yesterday evening I had a nice 8 point tending a doe around my dog kennels and house. I guessed him at a three year old that would score around 125 Gross B&C. The recent rains and acorn crop has flushed the does and I am guessing this is why one cycled so early. I tried to photograph but he would not leave the security of the oak brush.

We had about half an inch of rain on Wednesday but it has remained cloudy and cool so it is still pretty sticky out there. Going to be down in the 30's in the morning and I bet you see a little rutting activity.

Outstanding morning. Broke the new Bayside BFR 44 in on two hogs. Both were at about 65 yards. Pass through on both with a hand loaded xtp. Shot the bigger sow first who fell instantly. About 2 minutes later the little boar came back and decided to take a dirt nap as well. Cleo road.

I am heading out this afternoon. We will have a pretty quiet camp for the opener.

Good job! What’s your scope setup on that rig? I’m trying to decide red dot or scope for mine! Plan to get it set up and shoot something with it but likely 20yds or less!

I ran south of Menard to feed a couple of steers that are penned and returning about 8:30, had to wait on two different bucks chasing two different does across the Cleo Road. One 4 year old 10 point and the other about a 3 year old 8 point. Both had dark horns and fair mass.

This is an old bushnell trophy handgun series scope. It’s held up well over the years. I actually prefer RDS but do like a scope when hogs are a possibility since they usually come out in very low light.

First freeze of the year here in Menard. 31 degrees, clear, cold and no wind...beautiful day. Unfortunately, I am cooking for 50-70 folks and it is the Veteran's Day Parade at 10:00 AM which is a big deal here. Menard County had one of the highest percentages of the population serve in WWII, so Veterans Day is huge.

Well I’m just south of y’all In Kimble county as I’ve mentioned previously but starting to see some rutting going on. One lease member shot a nice heavy 9 Saturday morning. Got our first official freeze then too. Things should get fun in the next 3 weeks or so.

I know most of the ranches in that area and have hunted them through the years.

Nice trip and weather at the lease last weekend. Wheat was up high in our front pasture and game was taking advantage of it. Quite a few Axis and some really nice bucks. Meat comes first though. HaHa

They seem to be a nomad roaming type of animal.
I may see them heavy for a couple of years and not see them again for another 2 or 3 years.
They love the winter wheat and I usually only see them there when it sprouts early.

We have seen some early stuff going on. Mostly young ones just pushing lightly. I was hoping to have a crazy rut soon and no trickle. This is my first yr in Menard and we are West of town off 190.

Good eight point! I just ran south of town on Cleo Rd. to feed steer before church and saw two really nice ten point bucks running does. One was when I was driving south and the other was on my return trip. 130 class bucks.

I second AT&T is the best. As deer movement goes. The deer were spooky yesterday and slow. Saw a lot in the last 30 minutes. Just no shooters. The rut is under way. I’m guessing the big boys were locked down.

You should see a lot of rutting activity. I have been seeing a lot of bucks chasing along the FM just a few miles north of you.

All settled into camp after hauling a new 4x8 deer blind in my truck all over Texas the last 36 hours. Hopefully we can get it setup with little issues.

Karla wants to shoot a deer, turkey, and pig this trip. She says it’s killing season.

Yes, AT&T is about the only way to go across most of the county. West Central Cellular out of San Angelo offers good coverage but then you loose service across other areas of the state.
