Three years ago I had some photos of what was then a four and a half year-old 8 point that I thought had some potential, he wasn’t real regular at the feeder I would say in a week he might have been by 4-5 times. My son and I hunted the stand quite a bit just to see if we could lay our eyes on him and get a better feel for what he was, and even though he continue to hang around the feeder we never saw him that year. Last year same routine had a few pictures of him off and on he was now 5 1/2 and was a pretty solid eight, I don’t think he was on the hit list to be shot but we still hunted that stand quite a bit in hopes of seeing him, season ended with plenty of pictures of him but never laying eyes on him. This year he popped. He was 6 1/2 years old and was a pretty solid eight point, he was definitely on the hit list and we were hunting that stand quite a bit just trying to get a glimpse of him. The first two years that we had not seen him I was chalking up to just the fact that our paths never crossed because of the fact he was not real regular, but now I was beginning to think he had us figured out. This feeder had a pop-up blind that was brushed in for both a north and a south wind, and we would always park on either side never driving by the feeder and walking into the wind when we hunted this set. We would always see plenty of deer and even a couple of other mature deer but never this one. Last Thursday I tried something different, I walked in from about a 3/4 mile out, and from the east to the west, over a small thickly brushed rise and slipped in the stand. Feeder went off, lots of deer showed up, same as all the other sets even had two other 5 1/2-year-old bucks come in. About 45 minutes before dark he shows up, no doubt it’s him, he ate facing me for about 10 minutes and offered me a 22 yard broadside shot, shot was good he ran about 40 yards. Way more deer than I thought he was. Ended up scoring 149 and three eights as a main frame eight with a 2 1/2 inch kicker, Live weight was 164 pounds.
