I just call 'em yellow jackets but I don't know for sure.

We just call them meat bees or wasps. Put a small chunk a little ways away from you and they'll go there instead.
Don't swat it, they will fly away without a sting if you gently urge them to.

Yellow jacket. I’ve heard people refer to them as ground hornets before but I don’t think that’s right. All I know is they hurt worse than any other stinging insect and I’ve been stung by, and that’s a long list.
