2022 San Angelo surrounding area season thread...

My brother and cousin were out off a toenail this weekend. Very little deer movement, no shots fired. Apparently there was a major wind, blew over one of our box blinds.

We had a little chasing this morning. Does don’t get to eat before they are run out. Hoping to see more as the weekend goexx as on. Gonna cool off a bunch tomorrow

I haven't been down yet but our guys that have been October and the last 2 weeks have said it's brutal. Horns are terrible due to drought and the late rain has improved range conditions enough they aren't coming to feeders. Just need it to get cold!! And in a hurry. I was hoping you would have a better report for me And we did get the wonderful news that we are getting windmills in the next year or two. Probably start core sampling shortly

Exactly what we are struggling with. Poor antlers and late rain has the ranch greened up and deer are not hitting the feeders.

I have 2, 2 year olds that come in daily.


The best thing about windmills is they have really good roads. The construction part sucks though. We have **** near 40 of them.

Here now…. Poor antlers, late season rain, and heavy forbs all over the ground. Their winter crack is everywhere. If deer come through feeders they aren’t there long. Big rains yesterday will add to the green. With antlers as poor as they are I’m glad to see the rain and can deal with no feeder activity. I do hate rain while I’m at the lease with the mud and messing up roads but I’ll take it after this past year .. The hunting sucks though…

No we split the ranch and cut the number of hunters. We don’t have the south side now because they are in negotiations for windmills on that side.

Saw about the same as everyone else, sounds like. Nothing spectacular on camera except a few pigs and the neighbors dogs and a bunch of 3 yo looking bucks. Hunted Sat and Sun, saw a couple chasing, but pretty much everything was 4 pts or small 8's. Whacked a doe Sunday morning for meat. Good hard freeze, lots of frost.

Our neighbors on the west fence line put them up. They went from non to 20 from deer season to turkey season. I think duration will depend on hoe much road building they have to do.

Any updated rut reports? I’ve been out here the last couple of days with zero rut activity. I have not scene very many does. I hope they survived the drought.

Bucks are moving in Water Valley, this weekend should be awesome with the cloudy cool weather.

We are 90 miles SW of Angelo(Iraan). They started chasing pretty good on Friday. Should get better every day from here on out. New deer showed up daily through the trip. Horns suck but the deer are healthy! Good luck to all of the Tgiving hunters

We're located between San Angelo and Christoval on 277. I am also very grateful the the amount of Turkey and Quail we still have.

We’ve been seeing good movement since Saturday. Chasing starting to pick up and seeing deer that we watched all summer show up 5 miles on the opposite side of the ranch.

Was at the lease south of Sterling City this past weekend. No mature bucks coming to feeders at all. Sat on a road overlooking and glassing a few hundred acres just to see what I could see, Mature Bucks running does everywhere and does grazing in the pastures. Rut in full blast. I don't rifle hunt on our place, so I gave up a hunt to see all this, but the camera showed I didn't miss anything from the stand and had a much better time in the truck, warm with coffee and nfl radio.

Didn’t see any mature bucks this past weekend. Activity around the feeders was low.

Was out this weekend. Cold, clear, dark nights, not much wind... and the deer were meh. Saw 3-6 does each sit, and a couple of small bucks, nothing even 3 years old. Finally had some good ones on camera after not much appearing Oct through mid Nov, but IDK where they been hiding. No shots fired. One more try New Year's weekend, doe patrol.

Same story south of Christoval, very few deer sightings. Tons of cheat and volunteer clover in most pastures and majority of deer are grazing on that and not interested in corn.

Similar story here. If mature deer suspected anything was off, (like caught a whiff) they chose to turn around and head for the plentiful green. I’m glad to see the plentiful food going into the winter and spring with the attitude of not really looking to shoot anything this year being down. But it’s surely frustrating for folks looking to shoot something mgmt wise. Had a great time being camp biatch though!

Haven’t seen much on feeders lately but will take all the rain. Finally got news from our landowner that he’s gonna let us stay out there instead of leasing all his land out to an outfitter, even with the price increase it’s great news. Finally seeing the results after 5 years of management work

Did get this management 9, have watched him for 4 years to see if he’d grow and he finally got put on the list this season

Yes sir, most of our bucks are in great shape heading into Jan. Hard to complain about that. Will be back out Dec 26th thru the 31st for an end of the year hunt.

I haven’t cut into a deer with that much fat on him in a long time so it was great to see!

Now need to get a couple doe since my girls have almost eaten all the jerky I made and are going through the ground way too fast
