I was discussing this with a friend and new bowhunter last week, and the arrow building thread had me wondering if I'm alone.

I started hunting with a bow in the late 90's and have loved it ever since. Love to hunt and love to shoot. That said, I have never been able to get myself interested in the minutiae of tuning, building arrows, tinkering with different sight and rest setups, and so forth.

I have subscribed to YouTube channels, read the equipment and tuning forum here, and a handful of other avenues to get that fire burning. Never works. May also be why I keep my bows forever.

On the other hand, I never tire of the animal/scouting/tactics side of things. That is something I think about year round.

Anyone else this way?

I started with no sights. Shot a 1989 compound (bear I think) with no sights and the little flipper rest.

Upgraded a few times since but never learned how to tinker, tune etc.

I started the same way Im still shooting my Mathews2001 model bow

I tried to get into it, but it wasn't to be.
IMO, if I can hit a tennis ball at 20 yards, that's good enough for what I do.

I'm pretty much the same. I enjoy bow hunting, being close to the animals, the challenge of it, but not really into the technical side. I shoot a plain jane older bow with run of the mill arrows and broadheads. It's been tuned and stacks them where I want them. I couldn't tell you the weight to the nearest grain, the FOC, don't care about getting every FPS, it just works like it is. We all have different things we geek out on. Most people don't know an IH V8 has timing set off of cylinder #8 instead of #1.

I’m not an equipment junkie. I bow hunt 99% of the time now but I don’t try and dive too much into the technical aspects of things beyond what is proven to be accurate and kill animals

I learned how to do all of that out of necessity and I still work on my own bows, friends bows, out of necessity but I prefer not too. I can't stand it when a "tech" at a pro shop screws up my set up.

Not being able to do work on or tune a bow can ruin a very expensive hunt. We packed in with llamas 14 miles for a elk hunt in Idaho and also had wolf tag in the event we saw one during the hunt. Wolf were spotted crossing in a meadow and we were able to get 50 yards out for a shot. I was pulling arrow from quiver to knock on string while watching the wolf and accidently dragged across cable slicing it halfway in two rendering my bow unshootable. To get to a bow shop wasn't an option. Luckily I plan for the worst and had extra cable, string and portable press in truck at trailhead so I could fix in field and only lost 1 day of hunt. I know its not as fun as scouting animals and setups but it's a necessary skill that all should know in the event a bowshop isn't an option.

I killed my first 17 deer with a Bear Whitetail Hunter and have every type and size arrow I could find. Nothing matched and didn't use sights. I pull my bow out a couple weeks before season now and shoot a few arrows and call it good. I found I don't have to work on my equipment near as often as I did when I shot year round.

I approve this thread. Hunted with shotguns and rifles for about 56 years. Bow hunted now for 34 years. Don’t know how to tweek any of em. I prefer to pay a professional other than sighting in.

OP, I have been using a bow for the last 8 years and got hooked immediately. Rarely hunt rifle anymore. I am somewhat like you, if it hits where I am aiming I am good. I cant afford the Africa hunts or take shots over 40 yards. If I could/need to, I might get more into learning about arrow spin, FOC, and all that.

I am the same. I love to shoot. I love to hunt. I don't care about the technical aspect. I did have my bow string break on a bear hunt in Canada last May. It was the last day of the hunt so it didn't matter but it could have. My brother in law likes to reload for his rifles. He is really encouraging me to get in to it. I just don't think I have the focus and detail for that either.

CCR takes care of the technical side of the bow for me.... I tried but I just don't have time to jack with all that these days. Plus they are much better at it than me and it gives me an opportunity to harass FND and Kyle..

I take care of getting my quarry within range and shooting proficiently so I can trip the trigger on their handywork..

Picked up a beginner bow for the 1st time 3 years ago. This summer upgraded with a Mathews once I knew I was hooked on bow hunting. I really have little to no interest in the technical side of it. Really appreciate the guys at the bow shop for that. I like to have it dialed in and leave it alone. I can see how it would be beneficial if your getting off the grid on some bigger hunting trips to have that knowledge in the field.

I didn’t know anything about tuning until about 2000 when someone mentioned I should shoot through paper. That’s was good info and that’s really about I ever worry about. Killed lots of still since 86

I know just enough about the technical side to mess with stuff when I shouldn't! I actually love tinkering with my bow and arrows and wish I had more time and equipment so I could learn to do everything my self. I think a good local shop makes the most sense for the majority, but no all of us are blessed with such a shop. Nothing more frustrating than having someone work on your equipment that isn't capable and it always ends with more time and money spent.

Same. I don’t have any idea how much my arrows weigh or my kinetic energy or how FOC is or what have you. I don’t know my exact draw weight in my bow, think it’s 60lbs. Looked up a spine chart for my draw length and weight and have some middle of the road arrows. Shoot and hit where I aim at and I’m good.

Honestly same with rifle hunting. Factory ammo, my scopes don’t have dials and levers and such. Wood stocks on my guns and regular old calibers of 270, 243, 30-06 etc. boring.

That was me last summer. Honestly killing a deer at 15-20 yards seems almost as easy as rifle hunting after all the time and work it took to get me and my bow accurate at 60-70 yards.

I tinkered a lot, especially with arrow builds. There is not a whole of tinkering on a bow really, but arrows seem unlimited.

I'm mildly interested in the technical aspects of how things work, as I am with many mechanical tools, but the tuning is mind numbingly boring.

I'm somewhat interested in the different theories on arrow weights/foc/broadhead performance though. I lean heavy in that dept anyway, so when I got my 1st new bow in 12 years last year I built all new arrows at 530grs a piece...really like how they work on hogs so far.

I use to pretty much live in the old South Tx archery shop in Victoria when Jack owned it . Almost every day off I was there . Between Jack , the late Tomb, Richie,Randy and James . I learned a lot . I pretty much still do all my own stuff . Bout the only thing I can’t do at home now Is build strings . I have the 4post set up just no stretcher .

I use to coach 4H archery, I learned way more about tuning and adjusting bows than I ever wanted to. Now at the ripe ole age of 64, I found it much more beneficial to tune my body then the bow. My bow doesn't get out of sync near as easily as my body does.

I don't get too into the weeds but I do enjoy having the knowledge and ability to set up my bow as well as arrows to a specific scenario/need. Also this way with guns as well. I have also saved a number of hunts for myself and others by being handy and knowledgeable with the tools we use (guns and bows). Scouting and all the other actual hunting stuff I definitely enjoy more.

I think people are either tinkerers or they're not... I am definitely a tinkerer when it comes to bows... mostly I started tinkering because I didn't want to rely on the bow shops schedule aligning with mine... I do most of my tinkering at night when I have time.

I assume I am better at it than the bad bow shops, and not as good as the really good ones, but I enjoy it. I assume I am very much in the minority, because whenever I buy a bow the shop people seem surprised when I just walk out with a bare bow to set up myself... like it doesn't happen very often.

diamond10x Ten Point Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: AK Hunt In: USA	I don't get too into the weeds but I do enjoy having the knowledge and ability to set up my bow as well as arrows to a specific scenario/need. Also this way with guns as well. I have also saved a number of hunts for myself and others by being handy and knowledgeable with the tools we use (guns and bows). Scouting and all the other actual hunting stuff I definitely enjoy more.

I am definitely a tinkerer when it comes to bows... mostly I started tinkering because I didn't want to rely on the bow shops schedule aligning with mine... I do most of my tinkering at night when I have time. I assume I am better at it than the bad bow shops, and not as good as the really good ones, but I enjoy it. I assume I am very much in the minority, because whenever I buy a bow the shop people seem surprised when I just walk out with a bare bow to set up myself... like it doesn't happen very often.
