I always shake my head when people talk about how long it took for a waitress to take their drink order/order after seated/get their food...When it's crowded af!
Make a drink,and take it with you.Relax,and let the Mary's game,come to you..If you can't handle Mary's,don't ever go to the Loco Coyote..Another place I really like.If you're in a hurry,go somewhere else😃

My last visit which wasn't to long ago was pretty bad. Maybe the cook was having a bad day or hung over. Not driving that far again for a bad meal.

This!!, I've also learned that when a person posts about a restaurant they like, someone will come along and crap on their dreams. People just can't let someone be happy lol.

Anytime Mary's is brought up you get the slicks coming out if the woodwork to bash it and talk about how terrible it is. If it was so bad it would not be PACKED every night.

Yup..... some folks wear it as a badge of honor... like they have the only taste buds in the world and everybody should curb their taste to theirs... And they want to be the only one that had eaten the best of something and be different so they give you their off the wall favorite.

ďOh you think thatís good? You should try yada yada yada... I know whatís best you donít . ď

Marys is pretty good, in my opinion not great. I grew up in stephenville and you can ride 4 wheelers all the way to New York hill and never touch pavement so thatís where we normally went. Nice ride with a cold sixer

Luv them New Yawk Hill nachos. I can only eat a half order and still drive without going to sleep at the wheel. Been to Mary's twice this year. Always my favorite for CFS. Mary's on the Brazos ain't bad but not as good as Marys in Strawn.

All of it boils down to personal tastes and textures. That fake gravy most of the places puts out is an automatic fail for me. I'd hadn't been to every cfs joint in the state. Mary's ranks pretty high for me but also been going there since the late 80s. And it has changed in that time.

Also been going to New York hill since it opened. Won't get the cfs with fake gravy ever again. Georges was a One and done too. Try old jody's in temple; they'll beat both of those on any given day.

Wow, you are old. We used to got to Flossy`s on the first Tuesday of the month for all the boiled shrimp you could eat. Probably not until 81 though, so you beat me. Mary actually bought a lot of Flossy`s plates and other cooking supplies when they closed so Flossy`s is still alive in spirit. Mary`s is a place you are going to run into people from all over Texas. We sat beside a NFL football player a few years ago that was playing for the 49ers(who I can`t remember) but he was huge to say the least. Met and sat behind Randy Galloway (sports writer) about 5 years ago. Saw several world champion cowboys, Ty Murray and Tuff Hedeman and even ran into Hal Jay, the famous morning show host from WBAP.

On another note: Mary Trotter(the owner of Mary`s) has given back to that little community over the years. Not only has she given lots of young kids a job and opportunity over the years where there were no local jobs. She has also donated lots of thing and money to the local school. She`s a hard worker and a class act/lady.

The fact that every weekend you basically have to wait outside to get in or make a reservation, speaks for itself. Mary Trotter (the owner) does a great job considering how hard it is finding and keeping good help in such a small town. Our family goes there 4-5 times a year just for birthdays and the service has always been good or better than most other places.
Does she still make you a birthday cake for your birthday? Back in the late 80's if you called ahead she would make you a cake, no charge!

I don`t know about a cake, but we got a free pie once and took it home and my wife got a free piece of coconut pie last month on her birthday when we went there. Who could eat a cake after eating as much food as you get there. We have eaten there more than once and received the ticket with a NC(no charge) written on the ticket. I have a friend that she does the same from time to time.

Yes, stopped in with the family back in August. Same waitresses . Very good, not as good as New York Hill, but as good or better than Maryís.

Comparing different styles and regions and having a favorite does not make one picky. I can't remember having a bad meal or ever getting this crappy service people complain about. The last time I hit up Mc Donald's for a Mc Double I enjoyed it.

No doubt Mary's is a shell of what it once was, but it's still good. Whoever, mentioned BJs in Mingus ain't lying. I will go out of my way to get a pie from there. Of course, 3 or 4 cold beers dont make it any worse

Where did you drank at. The Dodge House, The Pub, The Timbers, South Fork. I have closed them all down back in the day. We would go to the "Pit Grill" and eat after the bar closed. Good times.

It is still there. It is also hit or miss like Mary`s but they are a little pricey with smaller servings and no cold beer. I ate one of the best CFS there a couple of years ago and went back a few weeks later and it was very tough and undercooked. Nostalgia will keep them open for years as long as someone is willing and able to run it.

Ate many a meal at Mary’s, Jake & Dorothy’s, BJ’s, the Smokestack, New York Hill, Lyda’s Food Basket, Woody’s, Montana’s and a bunch of other places in that neck of the woods. Drank a few beers in Mingus, too. Usually with one eye checking my six. Lol. Not to mention all the bars in Stephenville.

Best chicken fried steak I have ever ate was at Woody’s several years ago... with Woody doing the actual cooking, IIRC. It was fantastic. I have never been able to catch it when it was as good since then.

Gonna try Jody’s in Temple. To whomever posted that, thanks for the heads up on that one.

Bill and Rosa’s Steakhouse in D’Hanis is still my favorite CFS, but I really want to try Marry’s in Strawn. Anyone that can cook a whole flank of beef chicken fried with gravy deserves respect lol. I’m gonna try it next time I am out that way

It was an exquisite dining experience in a small town off the highway.

I had 3 other guys with me, 2 had never been there. We drove in from the metromess to meet our other bud that moved to Bandera. We are all ex popo and we all worked together.

It took about 30 minutes to get a table. We were asked what we wanted to drink after about 5 minutes and the drinks were served in good time. We also placed our order when asked what we wanted to drink. 4 of us ordered the medium CFS, salad, and fries, one oddball made it difficult and ordered mashed taters instead of fries.

The dining room began to have turnover, this was at about 1:45. So we did see several other tables sat after we had ordered.

To make the story shorter, we, well most of us received our order after ordering 1 1/2 hours. 2 got their order, 5-10 minutes later 2 more got their order, then after talking to 3 waitress the last guy, which had never been there, got his order, probably 10 mins after we got ours.

All the others that came in after us was served before us and one of the parties was a table of 5 just like us.

As it was not a great experience for the 2 that had never been there, they did not complain about the quality of the groceries, except on the way home, 2 hours of hard gut packed driving.

The best part, we were able to be together after over a year and it was fun reliving memories.

Again, we enjoyed the food, but as some, a lot have said, the service is lacking, and in our case, p*** poor. Will I go back, probably, itís a great experience to take folks there and watch their eyes bug out over the size of the portions. You just gotta know, which I did, it ainít no fast food restaurant, which in our case was a good thing to be able to remember the good times.

Agreed! lol

I am usually pretty dang laid back when it comes to restaurants and food but there is no way in hell I would be waiting 1.5+ hours for my food at a smalltown cafe. Especially... especially watching others that came in after me being served first. That would be a deal breaker and I'd be bending my waiter/tresses ear. The best chicken fry in the state is not worth that kinda wait. I'd rather go through the drive thru at Taco Casa or Whataburger and be on my way in less than a 3rd of the time. I'm ready to get to the lease or ready to get home....food is just a means to an end when making that drive.
