So i ran up on a day trip to change out some batteries in the camera and get a few things done before the opener. I had to dump 100lbs of molded rice bran out of my troughs because it wasn't touched. Is anybody running anything as a self feed attractant? Outside of have deer blocks available, I would like to keep something out for around the clock available feeding...

My whitetails tear them up. Axis, not so much.

The axis will really eat on the berry flavored blocks at Compton's. Other blocks not so much.

That's crazy. I run rice bran threw my protein feeder and they go thru it with 3 weeks.

I have no idea why...Iíve got hundreds of photos of deer just strolling around it but not one of them touched it. I did empty it out and mixed up some corn and bran to see if I could get them kickstarted but guess Iíll just have to wait and see

I ended up having a extra bag last time I filled it so I dumped the whole thing on the ground and it was gone in a week.

It was 52 here Saturday morning and nice since then. I had .4" of rain yesterday morning and just a light shower this morning. Just enough to keep the ground wet and grass growing.
Acorns are falling but not a bumper crop.

Tried them, still no luck.
I must have an upper class of Axis. They only come to my water and sometimes wheat field.

What part of the county? We have luck with alfalfa bales or sweet feed

You mean uppity class.

I'm on the same lease and we are in the extreme NE corner of the county. Our axis herd are roamers and confined mostly to the west side of the property. We have also been hog free until last year. So far we have tried alfalfa, chaffhaye, protein, rice bran, B&B, and 3 different deer blocks. Our pond used to be a big draw but not so much now that the trees have been cleared from around it.

Was 38 degrees on the bank this morning and 36 along the river west of town. This is the first time I recall seeing temperatures in the 30's in Menard County in September. No frost but a lot of steam in the air over the river.
Adios,
Gary

Nice to hear the weather is cool! I hunt in Schleicher county right outside of Menard and am looking forward to opening weekend. No axis on our property, but the deer have been tearing up the Alfalfa and protein. Getting a crap load of new deer on the cameras, so no telling what I might see

Hey Donnie. Cold out there? 52 in Austin so I figure it's colder out there.

We get lucky and they got rid of all the goats or they move em to our pasture?

Hey Zane, I havenít seen them yet. Last I saw them was Labor Day and they were in that pasture just north of our camp. Forgot to mention I got another snake this morning, he was under the drivers door of my lease truck to welcome me on opening day.😂

Well, had a group of does come in early. Finally got light enough for a shot and dang if the cows didn’t move in again and spook them off. Cows slowly moving out now, hopefully get another opportunity.

I helped recover a really big typical 8 with trash after it was shot too far back with a crossbow Saturday morning. Out of courtesy to the hunter I will not show photos of the deer as I do not have permission.
I estimate the buck to score approximately 160 as I did not have a tape. Also guessing 5.5" bases and he carried the mass all the way out. Also estimating 24" main beams.
A few weeks ago I posted that I had seen a buck with a huge frame for Menard County on a ranch that I oversee. This buck was killed about 200 yards from where I had jumped him and looks like the same deer. This is a low fenced ranch and there is no aggressive management or feeding program. I think that this is an indication of how good our winter and spring were this year. While I did not open his mouth, estimating the buck at 5 years,
Adios,
Gary

Very nice Gary, good for you helping with the recovery.
I agree with what you said about the good winter and spring. My deer just south of the Menard/Kimble line look good too.

Good luck all and have an enjoyable season.

Thanks Gary for the report. I can’t wait to see the pictures, but respect you for letting the hunter make that choice. That is a fantastic deer for our area and really pumps me up for getting to the lease and sitting down to hunt. We have a lot of bucks with some age, so hoping a few of them are in the outstanding category. We have been blessed with timely rains over the last 2 years.

I was sent a text that the buck scored 163 5/8". I am not sure who scored the buck and feel it is high. I would guess 155-160 to be closer and that is gross. The buck had 4th points but one was not scoreable and the other was just over an inch. Where the buck was strong was in his "H" measurements, browtines, and main beam length.
Adios,
Gary
