Well the rain and evening cool down this weekend was much appreciated. Got up early and got all our work done before noon just to find out we had a window AC go out. spent the better part of Saturday evening trying to beat the rain to get it replaced. Just got some photos from the new cell game cam and it looks like the wind is picking up again tonight. We need some more of the rain from up North!

We were there also. Quite a wind storm and maybe about 1/2 an inch Saturday evening?
Definitely cooled everything down.

I was bummed when we went to town to find that the Lazy Ladle was drive through only. Had to go eat at that Mexican place north of town.

Yes, that is where we had to go. They had a drive through only sign up also, but told us to come in.
Not my first choice, but it was actually good this time.

I have tried the small alfalfa bale. I hung it and it just dried out until the cows found it.
I have not tried the cotton seed. How do you feed it?

Itís funny, I have friends near Llano that say the axis run their whitetails off the feeders. Here they are really skittish and hardly ever come to the feeder.

We just use the T-post and wire cage. As dry as itís been they have been coming into feeders for us. If itís not super dry like it is we tend to find them in semi open areas

I'm sure you can call a local feed store and see if they have it or will get it for you.

Brady feed and fertilizer has it.

Junction warehouse has it.

Higginbotham and Compton warehouse in Menard doesnt have it. Couldn't get ahold of Kothmann's feed to ask him.

Since last night, I have recorded 1.6" of rain at the house in Menard. I have heard reports of 6" in Schleicher County as the rains keep training the same paths. Looks like we could continue to get this steady but not heavy rain until about 4:00 PM. I estimate we will end up with about 2". Chances of rain over the next several days and much cooler temps. Hopefully, we have broken this drought.
Adios,
Gary

According to Farm Logs we have received about 2.5" in the last couple of days. My Mobile Camera confirms as I have a pretty good lake at one of my feeders. Starting to see a couple of nice bucks on camera.

It seems that most everyone is reporting at least 2.5" total but heavier to the west. Raining steady now and more expected this morning. Rains have not been hard and as dry as it was, not running much water over most of the county. The river is supposed to come up a few feet due to the rains in Schleicher County. It is currently 50 degrees with a chill factor of 45 due to the humidity and wind from the north.

Now 3" at the house. I hope we get a chance to grow a little grass before we get a freeze. The first good rain since it warmed up last spring and an early freeze might make for a short growing season.
I think that some of you guys and gals are going to be surprised at this year's antler growth. The good late winter and early spring gave the bucks with a little maturity a pretty good start. We also raised a lot more turkeys than what I previously thought.

Just being selfish on the early freeze.
We have a 100 acre wheat field that’s booming with deer after a hard freeze.
Last year they really didn’t start hitting hard till almost the end of season.

Decent number around the water holes in the evening last weekend. Half limits if you could shoot. Hopefully you have a food source to hunt over since the water hole hunts would probably not produce after the rains.

Yesterday we were blessed with a great "follow up" rain, about .9" at the house. It was pretty scattered, I think more rain in central, south and SW part of the county according to my radar watching.
Grass is really slow responding to this moisture which tells me how dry that it was when the rain finally fell last week. Normally, a couple of days after a rain we can see the grass really green and growing...not this time.
I am beginning to see a few acorns falling around the house. Some trees have a few and many have none. I don't think they are going to be heavy as the last couple of years.
Reports of ranchers finding quite a few dead fawns. Body condition on the fawns is not good as there's simply not much for them to eat and Mamas are drying up. Hopefully this rain will get some green stuff growing that the fawns can reach.
Adios,
Gary

I'm over in Hext and the follow up rain went around us. Happy with what we had last week. I got my wheat in just before the rain and it is all ready up. Acorns are falling. Not to last years level but a few. Matt

Farm Logs has been reporting we are getting hit with rain pretty often out there. Based on my mobile camera, they are backing up that data. I did put a camera on a water well a few days before all this rain started. I sure I would have known all I had to do was to add a camera on a water source and it would start raining, I would have done a long time ago!

I am going out this weekend to do a final tune up for bow season. Looking forward to getting out there.

Has anyone been feeding rice bran on your place? We put out 100lbs on my buddies place near Kerrville and they go through it in a few days. I put out 100lbs at the lease and the deer won’t even sniff it...

No rice bran here....but keeping protein on timed feeders to try and keep bucks from roaming too much. We are feeding Alfalfa and it’s almost eaten over night.

Started raining lightly about 4:00 AM this morning and have had about .4" so far. As wet as the ground was, looks like much more has fallen than has. Ground is really wet.

I was out there this weekend and really amazed at all the new growth the recent rains have produced. We are on a property that has cattle and in my opinion are over grazing it, so great to see the new grasses coming up.

All the bow setups are ready to go.
