If you got offered these two options which would you pick?
A.) Nilgai hunt at king ranch. Guided, lodge, and chef with meals. B.) High fence ranch with your option of scimitar oryx or gemsbok. Awesome accommodations and everything on your schedule. If you picked this which critter would you choose and why. I’ve never shot any of these critters but these are my options, free to me. I don’t see a bad choice but looking for feedback on best choice. |

Gemsbok are my favorite animal in the world. Be hard to beat that in my mind but I know some guys love the Nilgai. Definitely don't make as nice a mount as a gemsbok.

Never shot either but both on my bucket list. Tough one to choose for me. Nilgai or Scimitar, I would have to do a coin flip.
I do have a Gemsbock from RSA! |

Gemsbok. It’s the most expensive animal to hunt in Texas of the three.
If you want the others pay for them yourself. You can hunt Nilgai on the King Ranch for as little as $1,200. Show me a Gemsbok for that price. . Last edited by AntlerCollector; 11-30-2022 at 08:48 PM. |

I would never consider the HF hunt over a Nilgai on the King Ranch. The history of that ranch means something and the Nilgai is just such a cool animal.
No brainer for me. |

Hunting the King would be bad azz, but shooting a trophy gemsbok for free is the way I would go. Dont think you can make a bad choice either way.

Financially the gemsbok. Makes a beautiful mount, tasty. That's a expensive animal to shoot.
Hunting the KR would be cool, but I love hunting nilgai. Beautiful animals and tasty to I'd flip a coin. |

This is a huge factor to me. I’m not a wealthy man but I get stuff like this through work. So, I’d keep the cheaper options to finance for myself on the bucket list for later.

Gemsbok. One of the coolest hunts I’ve ever been on, best eating meat, and a beautiful mount to go with it. Nilgai are great to eat, but as stated above, you can shoot those relatively inexpensively, and the mounts aren’t nearly as pretty. I had a similar opportunity 2 years ago, and have zero regrets on my decision. They weren’t easy to hunt, even on 3k acres of high fence.

Out of those 3, nilgai is by far the best table fare. Bisch Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Man that’s a tough one, the nostalgia of going to the king chasing blue blues is pretty awesome. That said some of these guys that posted above know way more about the value of each hunt so I say go for a and do b later on your coin! But if if it was a hypothetical only one time deal I’m going to the king!

I would prefer doing the King in big style like that. Just for the history. There are lots of cool high fence ranches in Texas that have all kind of exotics but I think I want to kill a Gemsbok in Africa one day......or New Mexico on the White Sands in NM.

I will hunt Nilgai on the King one day but they are much more affordable than the Gemsbok. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro Last edited by Mike D; 11-30-2022 at 10:54 PM. |

Nilgai for me only because I have already shot a Gemsbok in Africa.
They are a really cool animal though and if I did not already have one the Gemsbok would probably be my choice just based on looks alone. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |

I would do the Nilgai hunt mainly due to it being on the King Ranch. HF hunts just don’t have the same appeal to me but I wouldn’t say no to either opportunity.

Gemsbok and oryx are gorgeous animals, there is no question either looks better on the wall than a nilgai. I understand they are fine eating as well.
Nilgai are south Texas brush bulldozers, and better eating. It’s The King….go to the King, experience the KING! You can shoot the others anywhere in a high fence, or feed one from your Kia in Glen Rose. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Dale Moser; 12-01-2022 at 01:52 AM. |
