killing a coyote with a shotgun?

If Im using 3 1/2" #4 steel shot how close would I need to be to be lethal?

Depends on choke you have in. I'd say with a modified, with that shot 10-20 yards would be ideal, also depends on your accuracy.

Steel shot is slow and doesn't penetrate very well on fur. But a 40 yard shot will kill him with the right choke. I kill a lot of dogs with the shotty!!
My favorite shell is the dead coyote from Hevi-shot, but its expensive. Hornady makes the Heavy Magnum Coyote which is nickel plated lead shot. Good stuff and not near as expensive.

I killed a small one with a .410 with #6 shot while squirrel hunting one time when I was about 12yrs old. Sitting under a tree and he trotted by me at about 15yrds.

Get some #4 Lead Buckshot, NOT #4 Bird Shot.
                3" is plenty.
Got a buddy that killed a coyote on the run with a Hail Mary 90yd shot and 3" #4 buck. It's on video

No help with steel but my buddy did shoot one 3 times with 7.5s, took my gun and put 3 more in him while hanging on the back of my 4 wheeler with me driving 30 mph across a drained rice field

Steel shot was the poorest performer I've ever used in a shotgun for varmints, if your gonna use it as a regular varmint gun pattern your gun to see what works best. I prefer hevi-shot or copper plated lead in #2 shot or #4 buckshot

It's not good to shoot steel for anything..... Worst choice in shotgun ammo

Yep... My guess is 40 with a tight choke

Remington long range lead #2-T shot works very well for anything.
