In lieu of the other bad hunting trips and horror stories I've seen come up on here lately, I found myself reading this a buddy of mine sent me this morning. Samson's whitetail hunts, if this has already been posted before sorry for the double post

Sounds like someone has an axe to grind. A lot of that sounds like BS. propping a dead deer up to be shot? I call bullcrap on that part anyway.

But I've been told by people here that high fence hunting is harder because the deer know the area. LOL

That's crazy!
I'd seen their website, and it looked like some really good prices. I'm not opposed to hunting in a high fence, nor a ranch that brings in animals ... but this is ridiculous.

All you had to do to know what Samson’s Ridge is about is to read the ads. “No kill, no pay” tells it all. Newsflash......they ain’t the only ones.

That is the ultimate phony hunt. Especially the long drive there. Looking on the aerial it looks like Mr. Sampson cleaned up his place and removed the pens in the pictures from the article. The icing on the cake for me was the small claims court trying to reclaim $2k of loss damages knowing that it would cost that guy half of that to travel up there to appear in court. He should have been refunded his travel costs once the suit was dropped....

I am curious about the meat being dumped though...that's extremely illegal. Why has that nor been reported to TPWD?

Edit: I didn't realize this wasn't in TX... still seems extremely sketchy.

Honestly, I wish every state would get together and ban the sale of live wild game animals and any and all parts and products from wild game animals, not just meat. I don't see how the legal case can be made for being able to sell white tail deer since they belong to the state.

When they are considered livestock (as in a hf/pen raised scenario), Wanton Waste laws do not apply.

States will let you do a lot of stuff if you pay them. (Permits and such)

He got busted years back for drugging deer for "hunters" to shoot. There used to be video of it. Also a video of Jimmy Houston in one of his pens "hunting". The deer could be seen running around the little pen the entire time.

I met a guy that used to run a high fence operation. He made some comment about being worn out by the time season was done. I asked from what, staying up at night entertaining the customers? He said no, a lot of deer get moved around at night. So I took that as they were darting the deer at night and moving them to a field where the "hunters" could shoot them

I have nothing against hunting in a high fence, ive done it a few times myself but this is ridiculous. Unfortunately in this fast paced world we live in where the dollar rules, this is what we get into. A lot of people have more money than time and want a trophy now. I see operations like this the same as I see the drug cartels, if people would quit buying it they would eventually go out of business.

You have to wonder how a shooter can be proud of a "trophy" taken like that if they know how the operation works? There is literally zero accomplishment to it. It's really just a sad reflection on some of the folks on "our side".

It is a symptom of being ran around a pen by a pusher. At 1:10 in the video he says "we're going to shoot towards (inaudible) are you clear" Somebody on a radio responds with something and they shoot shortly after.

Happens more than you think. I've seen with my own eyes 2 so called TV personalities kill a deer that were in a pen the night before and then were darted and put into a bigger pasture. Both hunts made TV. Dam deer didn't have a clue where they were... absolutely ridiculous...

I used to work with a guy who was in tight with the 700 Springs ranch folks, the stories he would tell me about dudes who would just write them a check for thousands and thousands of dollars and say "I want X deer at X inches" and they would go pick them out of the pen, dart them, bring them to the "pasture" in time for them to wake up and stumble around for the buyer to pretend to hunt them.

I asked him straight up "What is the accomplishment with this?" and his answer was "Bragging rights"...

It's like buying a Super Bowl ring on Ebay and acting like you actually even played in the game...

I'm honestly surprised it took this long to get this comment.

I'm definitely not jealous of pretending to hunt in the least and I don't believe that excuse at all, we all work hard and we can all make time to do something if it is important to us.

I was thinking about this very thing earlier inspired by the OP's article and it made me realize something that's probably going to be a really unpopular- if you either can't or aren't willing to put in the effort to actually hunt then maybe you haven't really earned the honor of claiming a trophy.

Hunting is the only recreational endeavor you can straight up buy success, even if it is illusory.
