Out in Gillespie county since Thursday evening and the weather has been great. Winds were a bit high Friday, but the temps got them moving. 41 degrees when I got on the stand Friday morning was a shock to the system; but one I canít wait for every year. We got light rain so far every day which was much needed. Took a doe Saturday morning and felt good to put down the first deer of the season.

Saw a fantastic cull last night but he wouldn’t give me a shot. Right side just had 2 wicked blades that went almost straight up. Left side a big typical 8 with trash.

Had a couple nice young bucks and like 20 does as well. May take a doe today.

Yep. We saw several bucks. Rut is in full swing for them. I did find out that the landowner doesn't want anyone to shoot a sika though, so we're not hunting them. She is hoping to see them increase in number. I'd love to see that too. They're really cool.

It's been very slow, the cooler temps helped but the bucks are feeding all night and mainly does come into the feeders during the feed times.

Man that guy could be special in another 2 years.

I think this is going be be my target this year. There are 3 or 4 different 8pts between 4 and 8 years old that need to go as well. Should be a good year!

My target buck has already broken off his 2 extra main beam points he had between his brows and g2s that were really unique. This week I just finished replacing his extra base kicker he had in 2018 on his sheds and recolored the faded shed.

This warmer weather isnt going to help but I cant kill them on the couch! I found an awesome recliner looking chair in the trash a few weeks ago and I plan on building a new ground blind setup that's gonna make all of you jealous;] it will be 100% free materials and I'll probably call it the hillbilly hideout

I'm at the lease this weekend. Been seeing several deer. Just nothing I'm super interested in as of yet. Got one older 8 point I'll let my son try and shoot when he comes down (if the buck sticks around until then and cooperates).

I killed 2 pigs this morning.

Here between 45 and Goldthwaite. Full moon deer movement at a minimum. During morning hunts. Cold front blowing in late evening. Will keep updates when hunting.

I guess I should log this terrible butt-shot stag I took a couple weekends ago. Lots of these in Llano County - antlers in velvet but no trace of testicles. Weird.

Quartering away, I pulled it left. Hit the artery so he didnít go far, but bad shot I shouldnít have taken. Got lucky.

My mom checked water at the ranch yesterday and saw one mature buck chasing a doe and a young buck chasing a separate doe. She said she also saw a few bucks that were still running together, so it looks to be hit or miss at the moment.

Tons in Llano Co and then quite a few in Mason and Gillespie Counties too depending on soil type and proximity to granite outcroppings.

Yessir, we're covered up in granite. Soil is all just crushed granite.

What causes it? Some sort of fungus in the soil or something?

I believe so, we always have about 5 bucks like this every year. They stay in velvet until late December then shed the velvet and a week or 2 later drop their horns. They all have no nuts.

It is still somewhat of a mystery, but they think it is a certain lichen that grows on the rock or on the soil that causes the bucks to be sterile. On some family land about 3 miles from our main ranch weíll see multiple bucks a year, every year. In our main ranch we have only seen two ever. Pretty crazy.
